The Vagabond (Gifts don't always come on sledges.)

On a dark night
With snowy clouds
Dancing round
My windowpane.
I sat all by myself.

I heard a sound
Just out front
That made me bolt
Right to my door

The sound I heard
Was crushing snow
Nevertheless, who could it be?
When it was cold
Out there

I slowly crept
And put one eye
On my peep hole
To my surprise
There was a vagabond
Just outside

I thought,
What if I opened
My door
Will fear scare
Us both
What the hell
It is Christmas Eve

A little cheer
Can go a long way
So the door
I did open
And the vagabond
Stopped
As if he was frozen.

Sir, I said
It is too cold
To be out there
Come in here
And have a warm
Drink, before you’re on
Your way again

The vagabond replied,
In a beautiful
Caroler’s voice
Your good cheer
Has bought me joy
In so many ways

Your warm and cozy
Place
Was not the stop
I was suppose to make
Nevertheless, here you are
Spreading cheer
To one as wretched
As I, so to you I give
That alone you will
Not be tonight.

So kind sir
On my way I go
Wishing you all
The best for many
Years to come.
Just like that he
Turned around
And on his way, he went.

So I returned
To the warm loneliness
Of my fireplace,
And thought
What could that
Vagabond have meant

Suddenly the phone
Did ring
It made me jump
With a fright
I picked it up
And on the other side
A voice did say

I am here and not
Too far away
I know
You're by yourself
And soon I will be
Right there at your side.

The line went dead
It was the love of my
Life.

Very nicely done. I must echo Shirl's response.

what you both have said is true, i just spoke to her yesterday after i send her this write and we are very much in love.
I really wrote this as a Christmas miriacle of what a little kindness can accomplisish when a lonely heart shares it's space. Santa Claus dosn't always wear a red suit.
hey you know the season for giving, yes!
you both have just given me something beautiful, for a moment you have shared in the love I feel and I thank you for that!

the praise and tweaks. With a little polish this will be quite nice. You have the wonderful ability to draw your reader in. I could feel the loneliness, and the joy at finding that your love would soon be there. ~ Gee

I salute anyone who breaks the rules in the interest of art and great poetry writing just as much as I admire poets who craft meter and verse within the confines of good grammar. Walk the tight rope or jump from it and see if you can fly.

I just loved this whole poem story and it touched my heart in a special way. I am happy she is coming to see you and I am happy that the spirit lives in you each and every day not just at Christmas. What a great piece of work here. Bravo my friend

I'm going there, because it's not easy to be so far away, time and work won't set her free, so freedom has to come from me!

You keep us on tenterhooks
and we read on and read on
and with bated breath now and then,

in fear of who this vagabond could be,
in joy at you helping him,
in curiosity as to what he is about,
and in sudden relief
when he forecast the coming of your true love.

How magically fascinating,
all with the sound effects
of icy cold frost and snow,
the crackle of a fire,
the warmth of empathy,
giving a drink to a poor man,
and the satisfaction of companionship
for the rest of your life.
Simply beautiful Eduardo.

The poetry is half way between poetry and prose,
I suppose one would call this a prose poem then.
Not your usual rhyming type of poem,
whatever it was I enjoyed it immensely.

Thank you Eduardo with love to the two love-birds(?)
from Ann.
