You're Too Forgetful. (spoken word with recording)

when looking at old pictures don’t forget to look forward.
look forward and think, i will find that smile again think
i am no longer a child. i am a person now and soon the world will understand it.

when looking forward don’t forget to breathe
it’s hard to do this when you are approaching an ocean of doubt
but i promise it’s not so hard to walk with the rocks on the bottom once you get used to it.

when breathing don’t forget to close your eyes.
stop and smell the roses, unless you are one of those who gets an apology instead of an age appropriate experience. i’m sorry mags, but you’re not one of those kids who can do that.
other kids may get to do that but you can’t. maggie i need you.

when closing your eyes don’t forget to open them again
because you will need them to see the textbooks and computer screens
and the road in front of you on your long, daily commutes. do not be afraid of the pavement,
some days, it is the only thing that will carry you home.

when opening your eyes don’t forget to shield them.
the world is a bright, bright place, so much so that it will blind you if you ask too much.
overstep and it will put your eyes out but never be afraid to ask for help.
don’t be afraid to ask for her. you know she loves you no matter how much she doesn’t respond.

when shielding your eyes don’t forget the rest of your body.
knife block is most important because everyone is waiting with a shiv, and everyone is waiting for you to bleed. people will tell you that you can’t let them see you bleed, don’t let them see you cry
but it’s okay. it reminds them that we’re all human.

when shielding your body don’t forget to open your heart.
you’re going to get hurt, but what else does a girl do?
weren’t we made for pining after men? and don’t worry if you’re a lesbian, you will have strange feelings for your gal pals, its experimenting, it’s a phase.

when opening your heart, don’t forget to attach the strings to your legs
because who am i kidding, my heart is off limits right now. and if you are hungry the heart is of no use, there is more meat in the thighs anyway.

when stringing up your legs be prepared for the cords to snap. there are certain ligaments you need, and certain ones you don’t, and when you love hard enough to lose it, you will remember what it sounds like.

moan.

crunch.

snap.

A courageous and powerfully poetic write.
For us GLBT's the line
weren’t we made for pining after men? and don’t worry if you’re a lesbian, you will have strange feelings for your gal pals, its experimenting, it’s a phase.
is a bit off. We are not experimenting, we are real.
I read it for you, hope it helps.

"Death" is nonsense: what is there to die?
"Life"? How could " life" "die"? That is a contradiction
in terms. Can "light" become "darkness"?
"Light" can only cease to be apparent

Thank you! Jess, you've managed to make it sound simply beautiful, I appreciate it. The line about LGBT stuff is supposed to be what people would have you believe, not what is true.
Thank you both for the kind words and attention.

"when opening your eyes don’t forget to sheild them."

You misspelled 'shield" in this ine, otherwise its a flawless poem.

I love that this is mechanical...the descripts solid and fluid
the word advertisement advice rolls in the poet paragraph
and your last line Is great...The emotive conjure of words..
Thank You!

Alid, thanks for catching that! I'm not always the best with spelling. Esker, thanks for stopping by. I appreciate the comments.

Thanks,

Mag

Just listened to your reading and mine consecutively. Two different poems. Yours is far superior, of course, it carries you pure lust, rage and power. Yet the difference is interesting.
I've heard recordings of TS Elliot reading his own works and he is utterly deadpan, like he wants to give nothing away. I adore his work but it betrays what I always suspected was a selfish, secretive aspect of his poetry. WH Auden is even worse.
