For Yona

For Yona Wallach:

A beautiful mouth
Breasts heavy laden
Apples upon her slim
Jewess frame

Change was made
Possible for the
Children of
The secret enlightenment

And the word was her tool
The maker of worlds
The great Lilith
The creator & destroyer
Her hungry sex
A flower unveiling
To her lover's touch

Cut me love me
In a single breath
To see is to stand
At the great chasm
Of creation
To love is to gaze
Into the drunken
Vertigo of her eyes

What I found was a story about a poet who came on later in life. It seems she took the long way through addictions. It also appears she went out on her own terms, refusing cancer treatments. I must now go read her work. Obligation, after all.

Let’s talk about your poem. It’s really good. I feel like I would appreciate it more if I was familiarized with some of her writing. However, great language and logic. Is the poetry sex or is it the poetry of sex? When one cuts and loves with the same breath, those have to be such strong words. Duality within a statement. Interesting.

A very well written and thought provoking poem
Tim

TY Tim thanks for doing a little research you can google her poems some of her work quite overtly sexual some reassigning the ideas within systems of belief to the female order of hierarchy. She died young in a time in Israel when women were not emancipated don't know the state of women now but I admire her strength with words. She's quite a rare or rarely known poet. If you admire the Doors you may admire her or Allen Ginsberg or something of that nature. Of course it's wrong to compare. Thanks for the kind review regards John

after reading a few of her poems, I am wondering at her inner maleness I am also thinking that she may have had multiple personalities. She was the strong warrior that I strive to be. every day is a new battle, fresh from the start. thank you for having introduced us. these lines hit me the hardest:

And the word was her tool
The maker of worlds
The great Lilith
The creator & destroyer
Her hungry sex
A flower unveiling
To her lover's touch

perhaps, an abusive relationship with her father? she is ferocious and vulnerable at the same time.

Hi John , I read this only as a love poem first time and it read beautifully , classily and subtly erotic in parts , strong word choices conveying admiration as well as love .I then read her bio and discovered why she would have a profound effect on the poet , the man ,the manpoet , she was a powerhouse of energy and revolutionary thinking as well as a poet a living thunderbolt a name assigned her at one point , In her short life and in that her relatively shorter creative life she had a huge influence on society, she fought for change in equality for men and women and she espoused the theory that there was no characteristic or personality trait that was male or female either could have any ,She explored the thought of men being the ones preyed on sexually .She lived a hedonistic life at times leaving literary pursuits for periods she called expanding her consciousness when she lived in the underworld of drugs, she shocked with her poetry and her performances which were raunchy , having now read some of it is certainly explicit at times and she has a poem written about her father which would make one question their relationship even though he died when she was very young , so it may be about men in general .
She had no fear of tackling taboo sexual subjects like masturbation in her poetry .
Your poem pays due homage to her as a beauty in the opening and closing verses , the first being a sensual/ erotic descriptive of her body which in a few words give a vivid image and the last lines give the idea of gazing on her undoubtedly beautiful eyes causing a vertigo or lightheaded effect , these pieces show a reverence for the physical beauty

I am certain what is more important I feel here is your homage to the poet and the strength of character of the woman , she stood for change , equal rights , right to express oneself in poetry or song , the fact she used her own language to express her physicality and she tried to reshape thinking on how women and their bodies were seen by society .all this coming from a woman who died in her early forties , her genius helped shape societal attitudes and some countries are still fighting for the causes she started decades ago perhaps even her native Israel
Your poem is beautiful in paying homage to the woman the poet and the activist who used her art her words and her body as tools to draw attention to the issues she saw as important .I love the imagery and language used it truly evokes the essence of this powerhouse beauty and genius .
A poet unheard of by many has been artfully placed before us in this piece and it should lead any reader to do some research to discover what character inspired such a wonderful piece, honouring not only beauty which can be easily done but encompassing the honouring of the character, the genius mind and the heart from where all poetry emanates .I loved it and I am surely going to read Yonas poetry again ,
As always a pleasure to read / reread a piece from the talented pen of my wonderful friend , whose poems are hewn from talent intellect spirit and from the true sensitive heart of a real poet .
Edit etc offer applies as always dear poet
Thanks J

No not a founding member but I've been part of Neo for many years. Thanks so much for reading it's an homage to an Israeli poetess I admire she suffered from mental earth issues railing against sexual and religious authoritarianism. If only to spark curiosity about her life and poetry this poem has done its job I hope :)

Thanks Seren so Yona Wallach was an Israeli poetess I highly admire though her work is very hard to find perhaps so in the West. You can find her on line. If you like Jim Morrison or Patti Smith or even Allen Ginsberg or the beats you may like her. Thanks for reading my friend regards John :) :) :)

Time steals any thoughts of catching up but your update was a blessing a reminder to get back and read the poems I'd bookmarked to read, after I read this one I did some research. Found a few I really wanted to be immersed in. Strangely I feel a kinship with her in my own way.

Cut me love me
In a single breath
To see is to stand
At the great chasm
Of creation
To love is to gaze
Into the drunken
Vertigo of her eyes..

Those last three lines and the three before are the hook for me.

To love is to gaze
into the drunken
Vertigo of her eyes.

Magnificent.

Yes she may have known pain and anguish of mental illness but I see her as a spokesperson for women’s rights. Reversal of power roles both sexual and political in the private world and in the religious sense. All my heroes have been rebels or trailblazers and I think her poetry is not too well known in the west xxx
