THEY SAY THERE'S AN ARROW

THEY SAY THERE'S AN ARROW

They say there's an arrow
That seeks out the heart
Of a man who profanes in the West-
We've been silent so long,
But now, in guise of a song,
This man puts all of our patience to test...

And, if Tolerance is the name of the game,
Then, the end of your game is in sight;
What should be no surprise is:
If you make compromises,
You writers might as well tempt Righteous Might...

For, the truth is, when some
Of the answers before,
Were not answers you wanted to hear,
You pulled out your Bible
You screamed blood and libel!
(They've been silenced before, out of fear...)

Well, we do it too,
In the name of what's true,
Silence dissent and the voice that sings of it-
You've gained from our war,
But now there's losses in store:
There's mud we too can sling on your prophets...
And blood on your profits...

And, if Tolerance is the name of the game,
Then, the end of your game is in sight;
What should be no surprise is:
If you make compromises,
You writers might as well tempt Righteous Might...

They say there's a narrow and dangerous path
That is tread by a man in the West...

"They say there's an arrow

hi there I do really like this, and I'm wondering who the man is.

"If you make compromises,
You writers might as well tempt Righteous Might... "

interesting line that, what's your thoughts behind it
I have just listened to the track and I REALLY like the
soft way it's sung, as the meaning behind this one
seems much deeper ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,ziggy

I salute anyone who breaks the rules in the interest of art and great poetry writing just as much as I admire poets who craft meter and verse within the confines of good grammar. Walk the tight rope or jump from it and see if you can fly.

I thought the reference would have been pretty clear...

This one was written back in early 1989, when the Salman Rushdie fatwah episode had just happened.

The madness of Fundamentalism had just raised its ugly head... and I felt compelled to write this piece...

The line "You writers might as well tempt righteous might" was just me having some phonoetic fun (please forgive the near pun there..."Phoenetic"...(al)most unintended).

Salman Rushdie's picture may have helped to identify the source of your poem. Especially when Neopoet's shirt bears my favourite quote of his. One of my other favourite quotes is Gandhi's, addressing fundamentalism in his own way: "God has no religion"

Psyve, again, you are a poet who composes lyrics, sets it to music then plays and sings it.
It takes raw talent to be able to do so, talent I do not possess and therefor I am green with envy.

Consider me your groupie, Psyve. ;-)

Thank you. you are most kind.

I take it you liked this one, then...

You would not be mistaken.

Thank you for listening and glad you liked it.

Am flattered that it reminded you of Bob Dylan.

I'm not much of a political person myself... In fact I have very little interest in politics generally. The few of my songs that DO have a "political" slant are actually based on the human side of the subject... such as "Full Circle: Requeim for Benazir..." which I had posted here some time ago...

Thanks again for stopping to comment
