April Fool

He thought he had recovered

When The Girl came in his life

A comfortable numbness of the mind

She broke through walls and barricades

He’d hid himself behind

Opening old wounds that he’d hoped

Noone would ever find…

And as she reached out to him

He restrained his own hand

And countered with: You’re barely out of school:

I’ve felt the things that you now feel,

I have stood where you now stand,

Believe me, I’m not trying to be cruel,

When I ask you to be cool,

You’re just being an April Fool…

April Fool, April Fool

You’ve got to do the best you can

You’re going to get over this man

You’ve got to make a start

And teach your heart

And force your head to rule…

April Fool…

She’d always been a winner

Her failures had been few

Voted Girl-Most-Likely-To-Succeed in school

Now all her old ambitions seem

To vaporize like dew

She’d settle now for being his

One and only April Fool

Half his mind says: Walk away!

You do not need this trial

You’ve sworn you would not once more lose control…

But his resolve starts to crumble

And with every new denial

He’s headed once again to lose his soul

And as he starts to lose his cool

Guess who gets to be The Fool?
