BEST OF FRIENDS

BEST OF FRIENDS

We were lying on the grass,
We were talking of the past,
And I told you of my dad's old steel rimmed glasses-
Then, you told me of the man
With another in his hand,
And you couldn't believe that he was making passes...

Then, you spoke to me of touch
And you said it meant so much
To be touched when you are down or just plain lonely-
Now could that be the spark
Made you hold me in the dark-
Though you said you really loved your one and only...

Still, we're the best of friends
And our friendship never ends,
It just grows deeper, though the river has its bends-
And, though I know
That you are another man's,
Still, I thank the Lord that we're the best of friends...

Side by side upon a plank,
Novice holding up the bank-
You're like a stone, for reasons that you do not mention-
When you say you'd like to go,
I say: I'd really like to know:
Is it sleep, are you unsure of my intention?

A bit of both, you guess,
So I say: Well, thanks for being honest;
I'd like to see you once again before you go-
And, when you smile again
Oh, I am a happy man,
Though, now, that seems so very long ago...

Still, we're the best of friends,
And our friendship never ends,
It just grows deeper, though the river has its bends-
And, though I know
That you are another man's,
Still, I thank the Lord that we're the best of friends...

I noticed a bit of trouble in maintaining this complex rhyme scheme. Don't get me wrong as I would not even attempt such as to maintain while making sense in the poem must be very difficult. I salute you for having the wits to do this in an enjoyable write....................scribbler

Thank you for taking the time to read this and comment. Am pleased you found this enjoyable.

This was written as a song, like most of my other work, and the rhyming scheme came entirely without any concious thought.

In fact it is only now that you mention it that I realise it is AABCCB in the Verses and DDD(EE)DD in the Chorus with EE being an internal rhyme.

Thanks again for taking the time with this one.

I listened to you sing your song, and it made the words mean so much more. In life most of my closest friends have been women; just the way it turned out I guess. I never did have much truck with men. I just don't want to watch football bad enough, and women, though somewhat dangerous, and in a completely different way than men are, will at least communicate about almost anything.

It is a sad scenario, your poem -- unrequited love kind of.

I really enjoyed it, for the nostalgia that it brought to me -- that required a long sigh before moving on to other tasks.

Thanks for this one.

Like yourself, I have never been much of a sports person... a good book or playing my guitar always won, hands down every time.

I'm so pleased you liked this song... if it brought a sense of nostalgia to you, even for a moment, I suppose the song has been effective.

This is definitely a song of unrequited love, and a sad one therefore, despite the refrain of "still we're the best of friends"...

Thank you for taking the time to read / listen to and respond to this song.

Thank you for reading and listening to this one.

Am pleased that you enjoyed it first as a lyric and even more so that you seem to have liked the sung version too.

This would make a great song, because i feel that there are a lot of people that can identify with this senerio. the only tthing that's bad here is that this is not about the two, but rather about the three, two are sharing an intimate lie, and the other will suffer because of the lie, eventually two will end up hurt. and one destroyed/
The fact that things like this are going on every day. knowing it can happen to anyone, when you don't even realize that your not happy with who your with or that someone who is with someone else makes you feel alive, oh, the maddness of it all.
thank you for sharing a truth of life.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts on this.

As Anna has said (see below), this is aready a song and you can hear it if you click on the link just below the lyric.

This is about an almost compassionate embrace that just happens, rather than a pre-meditated sexual encounter... and the young lady clearly tells the young man that she loves another....so there is probably no moral code broken here....

"Then, you spoke to me of touch
And you said it meant so much
To be touched when you are down or just plain lonely-
Now could that be the spark
Made you hold me in the dark-
Though you said you really loved your one and only... "

Even the embrace when it happens, is a little awkward:

"...Side by side upon a plank,
Novice holding up the bank-
You're like a stone, for reasons that you do not mention-
When you say you'd like to go,
I say: I'd really like to know:
Is it sleep, are you unsure of my intention?

A bit of both, you guess,
So I say: Well, thanks for being honest..."

I am pleased that this song seems to have struck a chord with you and many others.
Thank you again ...

Eddie, all of Psyve's works are songs click on the link below the body of its words...the poem.

Psyve, I have come to be wary of your works, they just reach in and wrench out my heart. Mais oui, what can I do but listen?

~Anna

Coming from you, this is high praise.

I am truly pleased you liked this . If my songs have "reached in and wrenched out your heart" , then they have been successful and their honesty has come thru.

Thank you for listening to this and my other works, and for all your support.

I do appreciate it.

Strange how no matter what others think of us, we all need *a little help from our friends*. I am insecure enough that my opinions really don't amount to much, although I am quite good in handing them out, sometimes unbidden. lol.

Your music really does have an effect on me, I'm not sure what it means, but there you have it! You seem to have put all elements that I hold intrinsic to art and beauty to sound and silence, to words of poetry in one package....your song, your voice, your lyrics, your emotions.

Thank you.

~A

Thank you, again.
