Fireworks

bursted in through the door giddy
we stank of fireworks
High watching them
over the shore

threw on a vinyl record
danced sloppily
kissed badly
and made love
on the horsehair
chaise lounge
Old..people of this
era rode horses
for miles..
three hours later
we were sated

fell asleep on
the waterbed

the television
going on about
nineteen eighty
seven importance
the morning
whistle at the
flooring plant
shrieking its
comfortable
time note

fridge was empty
but the beers
and pernod
were half full..

all that mattered
then........

Love lots of things about this poem. The carefree spirit of those days, the excitement of fireworks, the sharing with someone special, the juxtaposition of old and new.
It'e really evocative and I think you have captured the moment, the era, the atmosphere well.

I was 24..she was 30
I barely had a life
she had by then
lived many
moving on her own
in the world at
sixteen a harsh place
I had a job
construction
a bank account

maybe because it
was new I loved that
moment
we were a train wreck
I was a boost out
for her
and for me

there were no fireworks
we only went to the
bars

1988 was the year the
markets fell much
and then everything
tumbled after that

twenty some years later
at the time U could tell
from the prosperity of
the eighties it was not
going too last

I read papers...I watched
the news
the world still goes on
but having been a teen
in the eighties
hearing the stories from
people who grew up
that age in the seventies
when there was work
everywhere

years later just starting
in another relationship
my then girlfriend would
sleep early...I would
watch the telly like now
air conditioner rolling
like now
television on like now
our room faced over a
school yard..some
trees...view of rooftops
and a direct view downtown
so we got too see the
summer fireworks
....I just combined watching
them from our bedroom
window whose tall old
windows had that great view
the storms would come in
over the lakes then more
then now too.....weather
has changed too...no
more thunderstorms
or rain yet up here...

relationships change
places we live change

but they are and were
special too me
they took me on
lived alongside of me
I was not their main
"it" man....
but was there more
then the rest

still...

memories.....they are
there for what they
are
still holding their sway
years later...

thank U!

of Rod Stewart singing: "Wake up Maggie". Had a couple of lovers older than me, but like yours, we were on a derailment path. Never figured out what it was all about until I heard Rod sing that song! J I enjoyed this one and the memories that you shared. Thanks ~ Gee

our little truck driving dude
was letting her drive the mack
with fifty foot trailer
and sleeper...a city hauler
he was stateside and canada
for years...a partner when we
had some properties
the little mall..and all the cars
but he was a good teacher
fun dude.....she drove in
first..low of course..had too
back up a bit but she
made it...the mall was designed
for this...another time he
was moving his stuff at night
and drove up the good grade
residential...he was empty
and took out all the phone
drop cables.....always something
Then i was half horrified and
incredulous and went on
some adventures....I went
with him in the limo on a
concert give away ticket
and ride for the radio station

I was there when we bought
the grey funeral limo from
this nice jewish kid and
his ma...was beside the
house in rural area south
ontario city..a big rotti
was looking ater it chain
link....my then friend
painted it white...had a
crushed velor blue
interior..a seventy six
with the old style boomerang
I remember he drove the
carnival queen out on
the hockey arena
we had that photo for
awhile had his little
wifey and baby...

Rod's song...a good one!
He parked that rig on
our street for over a
week and nobody said
nothing...
i helped him hand pick axe
a one bedroom with kitchen
living room area in a house
he picked up..the basement
he filled up a dumpster with
debris....man was a hard
worker and crazy....
I was working weekends
and helping everone
but then had the melt down
depression crash
etc..

but the memories!!!

thank U!
