The Little Valiant Bird (edit)

Slowly circling on warm air
eagle eyed searching for a prey
looking down to earth
hoping it will find a stray

on a dense hillside
hidden in a high tree top
a little valiant bird cries
"pitirre, pitirre (pe-tea-rra)

"fly away or you must die"

The majestic eagle of the sky
pays the little bird no mind
even though the warning,
it continuously cries

Suddenly, with a flapping of wings
and a rustling of tree limbs
the little valiant bird flies
like a rocket towards the sky

Then like a blur it passes
the eagle of the sky
high above the clouds unseen
it turns and drops into it's dive

Slowly circling on warm air
the majestic eagle is unaware
that far above in the great blue sky's
death is coming from way up high

The little valiant bird
speedily coming in its dive
strikes the creature with its beak
plucking out the creatures eye

"El Pitirre" disappears
the eagle lets out a cry
from the pain in its eye
as it tumbles from the sky

Seconds later another strike
dead upon its second eye
blinded heads towards earth,
in hope it may escape

The final death blow comes unseen
striking hard like a mace
the creature drops to the earth
to its final resting place

No more will we see
the splendor and beauty of its size
circling gracefully
high, high in the sky

A lesson has been learned
splendor and beauty of size
cannot compete
with the valour of a little guy.

i wrote this a few years back in protest of China's rule over Tibet. The bird Known in the caribean as "El Pitirre" does attack when protecting its nest as I have discripted here.

Your writing is always vivid but I wonder if the opening line could be stronger by just a little rejigging to:

on a slow circle of air

Just my two cents worth here. :)

"The perfect woman perpetrates literature as she does a small sin: as an experiment, in passing, to see if anybody notices it - and to makes sure that somebody does." - Nietzsche

There are two reasons why I've started that way;
First to indication of warm air, brings to mind a warm climate.
Second the slowly predator circling set the stage that there is danger in the air.
I just don't feel that your suggestion seem to created that atmosphere.
Thank you so much, but believe me that I appreciate that you saw something beyond what I was thinking
Again that you, sweetie keep the good idea's coming. Some I'll take and with others I'll send you your two cents back. I can't even get a stick of gum with it
Hahaha!

The poem engaged me from beginning to end, a tough ask as I generally stay clear of more than 5 stanzas.
I think you meant "beak" instead of "beck" - a little typo, possibly. But enough to throw the stanza into a spin if unintentional. Good to be able to read again.

I was almost biting my nails with suspense and anticipation.
I was also thinking how stupid the big bird was and the tragedy of its end.
It gave me a respect and a fear for the valiant little one.

It was more than I thought in the first comment, words can be misleading.
I bow to you in respect. For my miss-understanding

I love this tale and the connection you mention with it.

I have some thoughts the possibly can mean something:-

"hidden on a high tree top.....in a high tree top
a little valiant bird does cry"....bird cries

"it continuously cried"...cries

"Suddenly, with a flapping of wings
and a fluttering of tree limbs"...usually flutter is conected with flying in our minds, perhaps another word?

again"the little valiant bird does fly"...bird flies

"the majestic creature of the sky"...the eagle of the sky?

"the majestic creature is unaware"...is there a repetition of majestic too much? Or done on purpose?

"that far above the great blue sky
death is coming from up high"..that far above in the great blue sky( many sky's)...death is coming from up on high, or from way up high?

"speedily coming from its dive...in its dive?
strikes the creature with its beak
plucking out the craetures eye"... ae ea!

"Just like that
the little bird disappears"...cold we have a name instead of little bird?

Here the neat rhyme disappears and changes.

"from the pain upon its eye..in its eye
as it tumbles in the sky"...from the sky?

"does not compete
with the valor of the little guy."...cannot compete with the valour of a little guy.

This makes me think of the tale of the birds deciding which bird can fly highest, the eagle clears his throat and assumes he will; up they all fly, and when the eagle reaches his highest he declares that he is the highest, whereupon the goldcrest (named kongefugl or fuglekonge
due to this tale) flies out of the wings of the eagle having hidden himself there all the way up and he flies higher than the eagle.

Love to you and I agree with you about Tibet; in the end who belongs to whom, we are all helpless in the bureaucratic world, at the mercy of their powers, even when we do elect them.
Its all this question of ownership and Hans Børli put it so well in his poem:-

We own the forests.

I have never owned a tree.
None of my people
have ever owned a tree -
though my family's life path winds
over centuries' blue heights
of forest.

Forest in storm,
forest in calm -
forest, forest, forest,
through all the years.

My people
were always a poor people.
Always.
Children of life's
hard, iron-frosted nights.

Strangers own the trees,
and the soil, the stone-heaped soil
my father cleared
by the light of the moon's lamp.

Strangers
with smooth faces
and pretty hands
and their car always waiting
outside the door.

None of my people
have ever owned a tree.
And yet we own the forests
by our blood's red right.

Rich man,
you with the car and the bank book
and stock in Borregaard timber company:
you can buy a thousand acres of forest,
and a thousand acres more,
but you can't buy the sunset
or the whisper of the wind
or the joy of walking homeward
when the heather blooms along the path -
No, WE own the forests,
the way a child owns its mother.

This always make tears come in my eyes.
Ann.

Does the "-" mean its a quote, or? Wow you make the mosses glow in the old valley of my mind, but then I'm no longer old since my last years experience I am made younger, I told the Drs.to make me so...and they did. Whoopee.

But seriously Hans Børli is one of my favourite poets, he was a timber man and was close to nature sleeping in thin walled timber huts in the dead of Winter and living where the animals did, so his words reflect his sensed presence of nature. Its a pity then that everyone cannot read Norwegian as you know yourself that all is best in the original language, but the messages are the same. Here isone more if I dare use the space:-

White Anemone.

Flower, why do you flower ?
Why do you spread
your white innocence
over moss and rotting twigs
deep within our desolate land ?

No one sees you,
no one knows that you are alive -
only the summer wind walks by.
Then you nod thoughtfully,
as if you agree with yourself.

And when night lets day out
through the sun-gate in the west,
you close your petals
quietly
over your white secret.

Oh, if only people could
read your silent message !
People who swear
by peace
with their hand on their sword.

Ah I'll say no more.
Love to you from AnnW

This is a good narrative even without the secondary message. It is a pity Tibet can't peck Peking's eyes...........stan

That's and even farther message, that few see.

You say the little valiant bird and its established, but in a repetition one feels it should become the name of the bird eg: The Valiant Bird and Majestic Eagle. Otherwise I feel there is too much repetition, what do the experts say to this?
"from the pain in its eye" I think AT the pain ....this part as opposed to the rest didn't read as poetry to me.

Oh dear I am becoming a pain?

"Slowly circling on warm air.....in the warm air
eagle eyed searching for a prey..eagle-eyed I don't like here!
looking down to earth
hoping it will find a stray"..hoping to find a bird astray (a stray bird)

"pays the little bird no mind....no mind is almost Victorian?
even though the warning,..in spite of the warning
it continuously cries"...and continuous to cry/ or screech/whine

Oh 'scuse I now please. must to make the supper ready.

Love to you and I still love this story poem, only quibbling.
Ann.

Your killing me, I do appreciate your help, but you've gone to literal on me.
I am not a English Major, so seem that I may never get this poem to where you would like it to be.
I suggest you rewrite it and PM it to me, and we'll call it a co-write
Please don't be upset with me, I'm just being honest with you sweet helpful Ann.

"even though the warning,
it continuously cries"...is continuously cried

"the majestic eagle is unaware"...do you need IS

..that far above in the great blue sky's"...don't need the apostrophe in Sky'S/ nor the S

"blinded heads towards earth,"..blinded IT heads

It is only the understanding in the English, prompting my remarks here.
The story is vivid as Chez says.
