POKER HONTAS
POKER HONTAS
I'm hopeless at poker and each time I play,
I end up by losing another week's pay.
But this time it's different, my bad luck just fades,
I look at my hand and I see I've five spades!
I win that hand easily, get myself steady,
My luck must be in, so for winning I'M READY.
Next hand is a beauty, four aces, one queen
But the game has been rigged, like a Hollywood scene.
The cards were all dealt from the foot of the pack,
The dealer stays in, showing pair of red jacks.
I reach for the pot, but to my great surprise,
The dealer has FIVE jacks - I yell "Damn your eyes!"
He pulls out a pistol, says "Listen here, boy,
You've just been unlucky, this gun ain't no toy.
Better not cause a fuss, don't upset the company."
I swung at his nose and then they all jumped on me.
Thrown out of the card game, lying dazed in the street,
Swearing awful revenge on that gun-toting cheat
But I'm back the next week for some more of the same,
Lost the lot to five aces; but, hey, what a game!

I really enjoyed
I played this poker game out in my visionary this morning as I was reading your poem Tam and this is really a nice poetic write. . A couple of lines could be shortened up in syllable count, but overall I had fun reading this and most of all the story gave me a great vision. You go beat that game today:)
PS I love to play poker too!
Blessings

Thanks, Mona, glad you liked it. The syllable thing is probably a dialect interpretation, your Southern drawl and myflattened vowels. Thanks for taking the time to write, take care

dogged determination
Dogs shouldn't play poker, because,
They can't hold their cards in their paws;
Even smart, cocky terriers
Would fall on their derriers
If they tried to play hands in their jaws.

Captain Smith
Was Rolfe captain Smith ?
Did he give her fever?
Did her daddy try to kill him?
Is her grave at the end of Gravesend?

Ice Cream
And I suppose that Wallsend isn't the end of a wall but the ruin of an ice-cream factory
