Making the Weather

Making the Weather

Billowing clouds, then more clouds
shaped like lambs, ponies and bunnies . . .
one resembles my Auntie Rue's face,
and another, our TV weather girl's hairdo
that takes on the form of cumulus congestus
with fluffy layers of curls piled on top
of each other. They suggest windy
conditions, but that girl seems
a bit too tail-heavy to soar.

By afternoon, a cumulus arcus cloud
rolls over the alternate weather person’s
face, indicating potential rainy turbulences.
But that fellow looks like a used car salesman;
why should I trust him . . . I want the weather,
not a 1948 Studebaker.

I pay little attention to those weather
prophets but choose to be guided
by telling aches in my hands
and most joints in my body,
all suggesting a change in weather.

Is it going to rain--or am I going
to be just plain crabby? I must rely
on my internal barometer. Ah—great!
Now my ears buzz and pop—
one ear forecasts rising humidity,
the onset of the monsoon—
the other ear--plain crabbiness.

What did you think of my title?
How does this theme appeal to you?
How was the beginning/ending of the poem?
Is the internal logic consistent?

most countrymen would agree with you Ali.
Love the subject matter, it made me smile. Living with a recently retired farmer, we never took much notice of the weather report, used our own senses and that of the animals. Mind you in UK, even in the North, our climate is temperate, so nothing too dramatic happens anyway.

yes, I imagine you have a more constant climate there in Merry ol' England, in contrast to ours here in the US. Back East and the Midwest we need to be aware of tornadoes even hurricanes at the Atlantic sea coast, flash-floods, heavy rains, blowing dust here in the Southwest, and the thread of California sinking into the Pacific. What is a person to do? I can only stick a wet finger in the air and probe which way the wind is blowing and speculate what it may bring. It's true, horses are finely tuned to impending weather changes--and so am I. Thanks for smiling, and commenting.
