Forgetting Mystery

They are painting buildings,
constructing new roads,
expanding old ones
which once lead home.

Ancient trees
are being brutally slaughtered,
without second thoughts
to what they've endured.

The couple down the road,
been married for forty years
just called it quits
because they discovered the internet.

Individuality is being mass produced,
while the cotton fields are burning
and the wildlife is losing ground.
I woke up lost in familiarity.

We're losing beauty,
forgetting mystery.
We're losing ourselves,
forgetting everything else.

Jess it's a thoughful piece on what we humans do in stripping the earth bare, the first stanza could use some work but I see Chrys has mentioned 'constructing' rather than construction...The first stanza I think needs to have a more powerful intro into this subject and perhaps it should have your focus on that first up to see if you can find a way to make people go Hmmm I need to read this...glad to see a new one by you again :)

Nice to meet you! Your poem reflects many issues of today. My favorite lines are:

Individuality is being mass produced,
while the cotton fields are burning
and the wildlife is losing ground.
I woke up lost in familiarity.

always, Cat
