The Rock God

The aged rocker struts his stuff
across the silver screen,
his voice a thin reminder
of what it once had been.
His fame, was legendary
a god of rock and roll
but the hedonistic lifestyle
has taken too much toll.
Oh why can’t you see yourself
as you really are,
a sad and tired old man
who was once a superstar.
The sycophants will tell you
that truly you’re still there,
but your voice has lost its power
and your head is bald and bare.
Perhaps there is a heaven
where aged rockers go
to airplay on their Fenders
in that great eternal show.

Last few words:
Okay, this isn't a 'serious poem' it is just supposed to be a bit of fun. I struggle with rhyming poetry, mine sounds so contrived, this was one of the better ones........... :-) But, it is something I'm working on. Jx

contrivance, if there is any, comes not with the rhymes so much, but within the line leading up to it.
you obviously understand the meter, so now recite it as a singer would.......... NOT always directly "on" the beat, find the "music" ...it will no longer sound contrived.
I have no trouble "singing" this poem. The contrivance is in your head

ACT your poems out, like a soliloquey, if they fall flat, fix 'em

Al

Hi Al
I think my head is a little in melt down. I have gorged on poetry and wanting to try new forms for myself. A lot of these are outside my natural perimeters (as yet) and believe me, I have written a lot that hit the cutting room floor. That's ok, I don't mind that, it's part of learning. But I really did have to contrive some of it - the ballad .......... well, I will go back to that another day (year)
I'm not a musician (love music, but can't play it), but I did find a certain musical lilt to this. I was actually watching telly, when some very old and wrinkled (not prejudiced against old and wrinkled am on my way there myself) rock legend came on and tried to sing. Everyone was cheering etc, but actually it was just blood curdling. So penned this in response.
Thank you for reading and your insight, really appreciated. Jx

may tend to believe the rubbish fans spout, who are listening to what once was instead of what is. I was born in the early fifties so noticed this with Sinatra fans in the sixties. I initially thought the guy could never have been a singer then heard some of his 40s and early fifties recordings.

I did wonder if they were just a small cog in a corporate money making machine - and simply worth too much, to let go. As long as there is money to be made, then they will be there, right to the bitter end.
Of course, I think some of them are also blessed with super sized egos to boot - no doubt fed by the corporate money making machines............ and so it goes on.

the man that won my respect was Tom Jones. He new that as he grew older he could never reach the high notes he hit in his youth so retrained his voice to sing lower. That worked quite well but he still took it upon himself to retire soon after, rather than listen to those voices urging him to keep touring and recording. This had the further benefit of allowing him to spend much more time with his faithful wife.

Yeah, love Tom Jones, he seems like a thoroughly decent guy.
Will not be around much now for a couple of weeks as going to the Lake District. Hopefully will be inspired to write!

to not long ago hear Nana Mouskouri (lol - I know shes not an old rock singer, but your write brought her to my mind) sing. She has lost her voice totally - high notes especially out of tune.... and why doesn't her manager (or someone) tell her?

I loved her voice, but now it's been spoiled for me.

As to your poem
Love it
great theme
great rhythm and rhyme
one little nit to rhythm (to my ear anyway)
His fame, it was legendary - lose the 'it'

I really enjoyed the last three verses (lines)
Love judy

'Each for the joy of the working, and each, in his separate star,
shall draw the Thing as he sees It, for the God of Things as They are.'
(Rudyard Kipling)

She can listen to old recordings and compare them with new ones. It should be obvious.
You would think an artist of any kind would no when their power is waning and leave before being pushed.

Money Keith, the root of all evil. If not the musician's money, then the corporate wheel that owns them. Jx

As ever, thanks for the input Judy. Will have a look at the 'it' bit and see what it's like without.
I haven't heard Nina Mouskouri for ages, I'm glad, because I remember the richness of her voice, she's sort of a part of my early years and I wouldn't want to see (or hear ) that changed. Jx

But what Should these old rockers do? Sit back and wait on the reaper while replaying aged memories? "Rage rage against the dying of the light" lol. But some of them Are a bit grotesque aren't they.......I liked this. It reminds me of an old bald guy I know who still scribbles out a few poems while all the time thinking his best poetry is behind him...........stan

Ruined her voice with hedonistic living. She changed her focus and became very good at Talking Jazz.

Hi Stan, thanks for dropping by. I always think the stuff I wrote is better than the stuff I'm writing. Fortunately, time has been kind though, and I'm not bald (yet)! Jx

like this! poets get blasted by the blight of their deamons and light..
a lot of them cant do what they could in their youth
yet the fans still like too see them try
like old lions and aged wolves
something grotesque and fascinating about it
mortality
and all that!

why we have the new doing covers
and even they
have just the shine to the real
shimmy the early works
but then I am not from the
modern era
and many of the elders kept
their voice like some do..
kitty wells could sing well
where others were gone
the way it goes!

cash was still taking his
run at it.
I found Hurt to be an amazing
example of it...
June on the stairs in that
video still haunts me
excellent poem
by the way!!

Thanks Esker. Yes, one or two of the old greats kept it going. I suspect as with everything these days, money is the guiding factor. If it isn't for the aging star, then it's for the corporate wheel that drives them. Sad. Jx

their great!
aging is....

See clapton has a new album out.. U2 was wanting to have Jagger on
a song but said he couldnt sing anymore...
I remember Hank Williams Sr moaning about how then the corporations
were driving him and selling him like Baloney!
and Cash was going no where until an independent label
took him on and his swan song time was awesome!
although it was not hard too see all the ruin that drugs and drinking
and the excess of his demons taking their toll...

I still enjoy this write though!
its like a wedding party..all the old rebels with a few glasses of
wine or other stomping shuffling about on the floor..

thank U !

Lol, oh the wedding do s. Universal aren't they? I'm always a great dancer after several glasses of wine, until I see someone's video and then...... crushed. :-) Jx

I rather like rhyming poetry, as over-rated as it may be. This piece is a great example of the thoughtfulness that goes into selecting just the right words for end rhymes, rhythm and clear narrative. Thank you ...
