A FOOL IN THE RAIN

Leaves toss to shed the falling rain.
Try as they might they remain wet
while clouds above them drip and drain.
And the storm is not done yet.

The same drops smite my weathered hat
whose wide brim keeps my old neck dry.
But I grow damp in spite of that
like all who walk beneath gray sky.

The ground is soaked as is my staff
so I make my way most carefully
while nearby brooks fill up and laugh.
I guess that they're chuckling at me.

Can't really say that I blame them,
an old man limping in the rain
pants and boots soaked to the hem
while the deluge beats its wet refrain.

But at least the rain is warm
as befits a late spring day
and I know I'm not the norm
to venture into this wet fray.

Yet surgery approaches soon
and with it months of being bound.
No walking woods, hearing a loon.
Just the T.V. and house's sound.

So one more step, ignore the cost;
ignore that I'm getting wetter.
I'll watch as limbs are shaken, tossed
then return when knees and weather are better.

Hello Stan,
I don't much agree with the title, as 'fool' isn't really the word that best describes our poet :)

Ps.There is an additional 'I' after the last line you need to drop.

u need a haircut
go ahead its only 50 dollars

Your poem brought to mind my own double bypass operation. I was climbing a bing in the early morning five days later, to enjoy the dawning of a new day. I wrote a poem about the surgery called simply operation, indeed I am sure I shared it here recently. I wrote another about that sunrise. I may share that also.

PS: I have always enjoyed walking in the rain.

I also enjoy a walk in the rain but I have little enough time before surgery that I'm not able to be picky about the type rain lol. I'm told each surgery will entail a min. 2 month recovery period. $ months when I can hardly spare a week with all that's going on. My father had bypass surgery twice in his life and I know that it's no picnic........stan

I was also told about that mythical recovery period, methinks its just the medical profession preparing people for a worst case senario. I'll repeat, I was climbing a bing some 40/50 feet high around 5 am some 5 days later. My period of being housebound was the many months I waited before the operation.

My youngest son went through two hip replacements and the 2 month recovery time was a bit optimistic if anything. And I've been told knees are worse than hips. But maybe I'll be the exception and be back climbing ladders and deer stands in less than month lol.........stan

I've also had both my knees replaced. Once again recovery was far faster than I was advised. Maybe some folk simply have a faster recovery rate than others. 'Twood be a strange world indeed if everyone was the same.

Lord knows I can't spare the 4-6 months I'm being told to prepare for........stan

Great poem :)

Love to you and yours

It looks like about 8-10 weeks before I can take time for first surgery. Depends on whether my will power can over come the pain for that long. It's been so long since I Haven't hurt that I won't know how to act without it............stan PS as always thanks for dropping by

I think can be forgiven.

You must not get so distracted that you forget your hat or to come back in out of the rain! It is a very good last stanza.

I'm always surprised when an edit brings additional comment lol. Thanks for the visit. And don't worry I have a special hat I wear only in the rain and haven't forgotten to return to cozy cabin yet. Glad you like the last stanza......I think (could it be because it was the end of this poem?) lol

Hello Scribbler.

If a fool you be then count me in. Having been the recipient of two knees and a hip, I'd gladly walk with you in the rain and whomever might call us fools be damned.

Thanks for sharing. - Will

Your having had both hip and knees replace you can tell me which was worse hip or knees? appreciate your dropping by

was not aware you had endured both. My doc told me knees were the worst of the two but I'm not sure how he's know lol

author comment

we have a misunderstanding, it is my fault: I thought you asked which was worse; Knees or shoulders... I have not yet had my hips done yet. sorry for the confusion :( He probably heard it from his patients or has a family member who has had the surgeries (?)

so far. Steven needs his hips done but I cannot be left alone for three days. We are trying to figure out what to do about me. Maybe a nurse or a friend?
