Looking at Pictures

My salad days live once again
the petulance of youth
preserved in these old photographs
untouched by present truth

These mirrors of the past conceal
the harshness of today
bringing back the vividness
that age has washed away

Strength of purpose walks anew
through scenes of soldier-strife
tangled jungles wet with war
yet filled with lust for life

My jaded eyes grow wide again
my ears begin to ring
as long-dead faces come alive
and long-dead voices sing

Memories are stirred to life
like embers in a fire
and I, though bent with old despair,
arise with new desire

A very beautiful poem. Title fits, flow is great, typo with embers last stanza, left out R. This is really a great poem, we all have our memories. If it was not for my photos I would forget I reckon. Very much enjoyed. Love Lyz. XX

hello

reviewing old photographs can be a double-edged sword. I guess you have to take the good with the bad or the joyous with the melancholy. A very good poem which flowed and rhymed well. The title fits the poem well. Always, Cat

Desire is the undying ember

Desire is the undying ember of life, love--old photographs remind us of this for we have forgotten & forgiven the locust years. Beautiful poem, Lonnie. l'cause célèbre. Chrys & you will be creating many wondrous snapshots. ~A btw I wondered what you looked like without your *disguise*. Quite adorable, actually.

Hi bear bear!

Cat is correct: sometimes photos, or any 'memento' from the past can be a double-edged sword. Some things are just better left forgotten, I feel. That's why I had burned all my original work - it came from a time period where I wasn't 'me', and I never want to relive it ever. ~Jess K. ----------------------- "I called out of work because of anal euphoric myopia: I couldn't see my happy ass being there...."

Mr Lonnie

I like the way how your poem moves accordingly...it reminds me of a line from a song...If a picture paints a thousand words...well, old photographs bring sad and happy memories back to life, regrets, tears, moments to remember...i think for us young, we must live and treasure life so when we grow old, we will have a good reminiscence of the past as we watch those photographs...i love your poem...

‘My salad days live once

'My salad days live once again the petulance of youth...' great opening lines, they immediately grabbed my attention. i'm not a huge fan of rhyming poetry; mainly because so often, emotion is sacrificed for form...to make the rhyme 'fit'. not so here at all. you have woven a lovely poem that flows quite effortlessly with a natural sounding rhyme... and you have infused real emotion. i love looking at old photograps. whether they are mine or not, is of no matter. in fact, sometimes, when i'm perusing second-hand stores (a passion of mine) if i come across photos from a bygone era, i can't help myself...i have to buy them. i wonder at the stories behind them... the lives behind them... the loves behind them... and i also wonder, how family members could part with such treaures? with part of their history? i completely enjoyed this well written poem, and could so easily relate to the emotions. cheers, p.

Lonnie Sir:

Ah, the newness of life, the precious points of view --wrong and right-- we thought were life itself. However, as long as we are living we should challenge ourselves as in the old days, to feel the vigor, the desire, the eternal awe in the face of life. Those were the days! Great poem!!! Sincerely, Hugo
