ALL AT ONCE

I want to be everywhere all at once-
In Paris, scent of fog from midnight gargoyles,
In New York, unnoticed in subways of faces,
In the Okavango swamps among the giant ospreys,
In Rio when the wet bodies of Carnival entwine...

I want to taste all the tastes at once-
The spices, the holiness of warm bread,
The foam of duck egg on mushroom,
The thrill of icy pilsner,
The water of the coconut...

I want to hear all the music at once-
The whispering leap of leaves to the ground,
The blast of ancient airs and coloratura,
The razzmatazzy dizzy jazzes
And concertos for guitar...

I want it all at once, the exploding galaxies,
All that I have lived, all that I learned-
Each day with something adding on,
Like today, like this moment.
All at once! A smorgasbord
Of song and love and all rest of it!

O poor man, deluded soul –
The wise have learned to
Play it one spin at a time.
Who are those angels of death
Who deal the chips in your passing?
You have known all along they take all,
All at once, in one throw of the dice.

All at once. I feel like this shows the true nature of the human heart. We all want it all at once.
This is a nrch theme and well written.
We all want everything at the same time but yet we all fail to understand that everything at once will just be a mess.
If a man listens to all music at the same time he will hate music cuz it will end up a bunch of nonsense.
The concluding Stanza gives a mixed feeling by including these two lines
Who are those angels of death
Who deal the chips in your passing?
and winning all with a roll of a die. Totally loved it.

That last paragraph is key. Hmm. re-thinking the rest from the perspective of death taking everything at once...if your not careful and want to much to soon? I think of sacrifice, and patience, and if you posses those you can experience many things, but not all at once...

Beautifully written, even if my interpretation is off. The perfect balance between abstraction and things I can grab on to.

i like the poem, i like the concept

and happy I'm not the only one out there who suffers from the sudden whim to take it all in at once.
Life is a gamble, enjoy each hand at poker table or roulette wheel, and yes, one day the dealer just comes and takes all your chips, all at once. Or, as Woody Allen put it "live every day as if it's your last, and one day it will come true"

A well crafted poem Eumoplus, it is actually human nature to want it , all at once and nothing to be left for others. And when we eventually get them all at once we never can make use of them all.Humans I think are known to arquire what they can't utilize.Could that be greed?
If so all human must be greedy by nature.
