Happy 2009 Y'all!

And so, a new year has dawned.
The Waterford crystal touched down
not a quarter of an hour ago.
As I watched its decent with tears in my eyes
I recalled the year of 2008
as I'm sure many people have.

I watched my 401k crumble
the interests rates lowered to a point
where they no longer beat inflation
I almost lost my true love
and I lost a member of 'family' *
As I look around, many have lost
many have crumbled

However, taking another look
I feel like the luckiest girl around.
My bond with my love
is stronger than ever.
I see Mother happier and in love at last
There's a roof over my head
and school starts soon
A first step towards a better life

And hopefully the tears of the downtrodden
can become smiles of hope
I know hard times can be conquered
I've done it.....

May your 2009 be great

The rough and the smooth

This poem sums up the rough and the smooth - the hotch-potch of bad and good experiences life brings - and it does so in a very personal, heartfelt way. May you write many beautiful pieces in 2009. Happy New Year, Robert. (and the same to you, Rett, if you read this comment).

jess

what a joyful rapture you have on the turn of the New Year! i am very sorry to hear about the loss of your loved one--mortality is hard to wrap one's mind around, no matter what the circumstances. what i most admire here is your gratitude which is beautifully apparent. as poets we tend to nitpick at our perceptions, constantly looking for something wrong (i'm guilty of this, very guilty). congrats! gb
