HOPE OF THE DISPLACED

HOPE OF THE DISPLACED I know it will be a surprise to youReceiving this hopeful note of pleaForm our war torn Sierra LeoneIt is me, your friend, MohammedRemember how I lost my right footA price I paid to the rebel war. May you be blessed to always giveMay your descendants prosper unceasinglyTo third, fourth and fifth generationsFor the assistance you rendered meTo acquire this artificial limbThat now drags me along desolated byways On the invasion of January the sixthOf AFRC/RUF junta in FreetownMy house was completely burnt downLike many other houses, the inferno ragedAnd our years of labour went with the flamesI am finished and have no where to sleep My daughter was shot on the legShe is on admission ever sinceWe are homeless nowRoaming the streets and forests of deathStraining for living with other victimsBegging for alms by the side walk I plan to build a mud houseWhen the dry season comesJust to get out of the camps.Thinking of you gives me hopeI rely on you, O! My brotherJust as you have provided before With courage, some money and strengthI’ll build four singles and a parlourFor myself and my dependantsHelp me to buy some housing needsJust to get out of the campsAnd live like humans, not like cows It is not your wish for me to sufferNor would you like me to perishEase my life from further strainingWith your blessed natural endowmentYou are the hopes of the displacedWe look unto you, our big brother, Nigeria

May the compassionate heart

May the compassionate heart emerge from all the world's suffering. May we all do our part to end suffering in for our brothers and sisters. Amen ~Anna

p.s. may I post this poem to

p.s. may I post this poem to my groups, including my Middle East Peace Forum, in honour of Nick from Africa, who was one of the originals in the peace process in South Africa. He always spoke of our being descendants of Abraham. And any peace process must include Africa. Peace Now. Love Always. Ann

Nice idea,

Wow T, I really liked it. Very powerful but not in a cajoling way. It was jsut pleasent to read. I especially like the last two lines of the 2nd stanza: "To acquire this artificial limb That now drags me along desolated byways" It helped build the knowledge that there was going to be some turn around or a twist at the end, which you delivered, and made me want to read on. I don't think it would be rated highly as a standard "poem", but as a piece of writing in general, I really think it's great. One quick thing though: "Begging for arms by the side walk" Should be Begging for alms by the side walk, yes? Nice read, thanks! Thank you

Thank you Kailashana for the reading and the comment, yes you can send it to your friends. Note the correction as pointed out by Kieran Nelson. 'arms' should read alms. That was oversight.

The mind already saw

The mind already saw alms....;-) The mind is self-correcting in some stages of awareness. Peace. Anna p.s. Perhaps you should change it via edit button.

Appreciation

Kieran Nelson thank you very much for your comments. Yes I agree with you. sometime, if you wait for the spontaneous overflow of powerful feeling that would pass as a poem, you may never capture certain events in history. As I wrote 'IN THE GREAT HALL' thinking in one language and speakng with the other, plays a trick on the diction and delivery in my writing. I need a lesson in writing great poems. Thank you for the observation 'arms' should read alms. Sometime what is in ones head is different from what is on paper. Cheers.

That is a very touching and very easy read and only after the read does it really hit hard. A very thought provoking poem. I think this is extremely well done and you deserve much credit. Now, on another note and strictly for improvement on an already great poem may I suggest that on this line, "May your descendants proper unceasingly" that the word "proper" be changed to "prosper" as this is what I think you mean by the line. Respectfully, Rett: "Life is like a beach. Salty, gritty, somewhat fishy and at other times, downright crabby!" Rett 2008.

Sometimers is getting to me

Sometimers is getting to me too. First time I read it I saw it, forgot about it and posted T's without making the proper corrections. I'm always amazed at how well the second language is *spoken* by poets. I can hardly speak let alone write my first language anymore (Hungarian). ~A

Love your poetry man

Dignity and truth. You give to us generously, us who can be trapped in our own selfish complacency. I do not know the politics between Sierra Leone and Nigeria. Will check Wikipedia but can you suggest other links or explain? cheers, Jess

To my Friends

Let me start with a special friend, weirdelf, as we say here, 'Long time no see'. Though I may not read from you, I can feel your presence in my heart, it gives me joy to have you there. The West African States, ECOWAS pulled together a Sub-regional Force ECOMOG to help bring peace to the war torn Sierra Leone and the cost of that in human and material resources to Nigeria was huge. Incidentally, I was in Sierra Leone during this crisis. Thank you. Linda Moses, I take a look into your eyes, I see myself and I know I have a friend, thank you my friend. Thank you Rett for the comments and the correction, I use your eyes to look at self and my little mistakes are removed. I am proud to have you there.

Yes, I am doing well

Thank you dead2theworld_kmb, I am doing well. I have not read that book yet, but I will check on the bookshops for a copy. Which nationality is Ishmael Beah? Maybe this will help me track his book. Thanks and best wishes.

Indeed!!! “Left to Tell”

Indeed!!! "Left to Tell" by Immaculée Ilibagiza, of the Rwanda atrocities. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ivy7zz7Bf_0 I saw a special Romeo Dallaire's vain attempts to have the UN intervene. http://www.amazon.com/Shake-Hands-Devil-Failure-Humanity/dp/0786714875 I am now reading (picked up $1.00) "The Wrong Side of Darkness - A novel of Men and Honor" "This, bold, blistering novel goes beyond the Iraq-American conflict to reveal the hearts of soldiers everywhere. Austin Bay is a true military insider and a powerful storyteller". W.E.Be. Griffin All this more than 40 years after the cry: "Never Again" ~ Jewish Holocaust. Peace Now. Love Always. ~A
