A Dilatory Toast

It’s enough to know you did your best

while attempting to succeed

Anyway, winning often doesn’t bring

the things you really need

Cheer up old friend let loose a yell

You did what you could do

You got the chance to master fate

How fortunate for you

If losing in the end still stings

If living with defeat

Is more than you think you can bear

It’s not, that’s just deceit

Too often we focus on the prize

We’re all winners after all

Except the many who seldom win

just happy to be at the Ball

If life is but a game we play

And we’re acting on this stage

Enjoy the part you’ve been given

Don’t waste your life in rage

So even if the play reveals

your part’s a supporting role

be glad you’re there at curtain call

with your eyes still on your goal

I love the love and compassion in this.

It touched me, I often feel I have failed to reach my full potential, but I have played my part for better or worse "all the world's a stage". You made me feel better about myself and though I think you wrote it for a specific friend it still had the poetic strength to reach others deeply. Thank you. cheers, Jess

Thanks

I actually added the old friend with no one in particular in mind, I just wanted to personalize it. I picture it as a toast given by Nick Charles (the thin Man) at a party. He, the actor William Powell, tips his martini and gives this toast while friends and his wife played by Myrna Loy, look on adoringly. If you haven't guessed already I'm a great fan of that series of movies. It blesses me that it touched you. thanks again
