Lost Love

By: Alex Tanner

Should I recall those blissful times
When we like climbing flowers entwined;
Our blossoms scented evenings air
As Love and Lust forsook our cares.

Your laugh was soft and gentle,
A butterflies wings in spring,
Dancing on the sunbeams
Enough to make me sing.

Eyes so bright they sparkled
Diamonds on moonlit snow;
Flashing hither and thither
To make my pulse race so.

We held each other gentle
Yet tight so not to break,
Though deep, our love could never last,
Different paths our lives would take.

For fleeting months we tarried,
Each time we met we knew
This may be the last time
For lovers hours are few.

If I love ten thousand women
Tis you I will recall;
You gave yourself so willing,
For your passion I did fall.

On black nights as the wind howls,
As I lie in a bed so cold,
Your soft voice echoes 'cross the years
To warm my lonely soul.

Longing For Redemption...

The edge of his singing blade is dulled
His armor has grown stiff and rusted
There is no more to give
The windmills he has tilted against have won

His hidden brother is mortally wounded
Gone is the joy of righteous anger
Departed in the night of his torment
It could not stand the assault

He simply lives, there is nothing left
Nothing to fill the emptiness
The aching hole in his heart
He's held by the chains of yesterday

An ending.

There is an honesty that brings
There is a stained window,
Where looking on a perfect valley
You can find the world, slow
Where rain begins.

You can find there, your worn body
That faces a day
And in some strangeness
You realize, that you are the prey.

I hear the way that people’s brains work out
But the cat of ingestion,
Left me in doubt
Tolerance to life is a certain thing,
But what symbiosis,
What paralytic thought
Could create such a craze?

Is This Growing Up

It can mean so many different things.
Going without,
Moving on,
Wanting less,
Letting the pillow be the only thing that hears your screams.
It means, not saying you are lonely
When you truly feel like the last bird caught in a snowstorm,
As your wings freeze in the wind,
Losing altitude, and losing grip.
Accepting the unacceptable.
Bearing the unbearable.

Tackling Terror:

Two branches of the same one religion
Fighting interpretation of edict
Modern weapons aiding old rebellion
Civilians caught in crosshairs of conflict

Missile streaking towards intended spot
More than ten “terrorists” killed in attack
Survivors shrieking for the dead and not
Able to grasp classmates will not be back

Last night

I saw in the darkness
white cotton shadows
lurking about to find
if I were yet asleep

I knew the moment
my eyes closed
they will come and throttle me
so I switched on my bedside light
and wow I saw all of them vanish.

Phantoms came to me
since age five
but sad for them
they must still be hungry
for my life
I at 78 am still alive
