What is Bad Luck To Me?
What is bad luck to me?
A misfortune no one could foresee
Plans made, hopes dashed
A black swan event
Relegated to the past
Can we inoculate ourselves
Can we prevent misfortune?
Is bad luck to be cured?
Is it like some disease?
What is bad luck to me?
Plans I made
A promotion in sight
A cadet I wanted to be
A dream only half achieved
Read the rest of the poem Show less
I never anticipated...
Bad luck would win out
What is bad luck to me?
Was it Karma?
A mistake?
Perhaps it was fate?
Or was it something innate?
Deployment orders
Set my life aflame
What is bad luck to me?
Was it bad luck that sent
Me to a warzone alone?
Was it bad luck that killed
Those soldiers, or just an IED?
That happened to miss me?
A black swan event
Unfortunate circumstance
Is bad luck a disease?
Can we develop a vaccine?
What is bad luck to me?
The death of naivety
A truth revealed to me
You can plan your life
Until your plans fall apart

About Me
Sean Michael Geverts is an emerging poet whose work examines the intersections of
family, memory, identity, and legacy. Drawing from experiences of military service and personal reflection, his writing explores the ways individuals inherit the stories,
struggles, and wounds of previous generations while seeking to create something
different for those who follow. Sean served in Afghanistan in 2010 as part of Operation Enduring Freedom, where he worked as a logistical advisor in Kabul for the Afghan National Army. His poetry focuses on the complexities of fatherhood,
resilience, and the possibility of renewal.
