It Comes In Waves
It comes in waves, like a feint heartbeat fighting to live, like a birds lungs heaving in air. It comes in waves, one moment of quiet tranquility shattered into abrupt chaos.
What follows is a dream, a walking sleep. A pretend world so similar to the one you left and yet so
different.
Disbelief, guilt, shock, every sensation you had no thought of yesterday now stains the cosmos.
The palms still grow, the flowers buzz with bees, the sun shines, the coffee isn't even bitter, but something is profoundly lost, lost from everything.
Two days ago we discussed a myth, one you promised to share with me. Now you are a myth, one that I promise to share with others, one that I will carry.
What happens to our love when we die? Does it wait patiently beneath our skin until the flesh and spirit
are inseparable?
Does it evaporate like boiling water? Blow away on the wind? Drift off on the current?
I think it remains with the people we love. Those whose lives we have touched. In these memories we
remain evergreen; we brave the storm, we stop time, we conquer the wave.
I won't pretend to know where you are, Cliff, or what comes next. But I know your journey continues. That you now face new adventures of which we, the living, can only dream.
I wish you the best of luck. You were a good friend, a good man, full of love and love lives forever. I hope
to meet you again one day. Until then, farewell.
