Lost Love

By: Alex Tanner

Should I recall those blissful times
When we like climbing flowers entwined;
Our blossoms scented evenings air
As Love and Lust forsook our cares.

Your laugh was soft and gentle,
A butterflies wings in spring,
Dancing on the sunbeams
Enough to make me sing.

Eyes so bright they sparkled
Diamonds on moonlit snow;
Flashing hither and thither
To make my pulse race so.

We held each other gentle
Yet tight so not to break,
Though deep, our love could never last,
Different paths our lives would take.

For fleeting months we tarried,
Each time we met we knew
This may be the last time
For lovers hours are few.

If I love ten thousand women
Tis you I will recall;
You gave yourself so willing,
For your passion I did fall.

On black nights as the wind howls,
As I lie in a bed so cold,
Your soft voice echoes 'cross the years
To warm my lonely soul.

there you are

the season of warmth, or rather inescapable heat, is pulling near. perhaps we can start there. perhaps i can meet her on the curb like we used to. where i asked her if she needed a drive home and she insisted not.

she wore different lashes then. her hair was full and her presence shadowed mine. i remember calling in a panic, "do you feel the way i feel?"

she could always put a name to it.

Talking with the Dead

I mistakenly thought the departed
could have nothing more to say, but I was wrong.
For me, the dead do make a commotion.

I hear them all the time in discussions
I have with them about things left unsaid
when they were here, with you and I.

Do you talk with them too? I wonder
if you’ll share what they say to you.
We’ve no reason to keep this to ourselves now.
I just want to listen to all they were.

Plastic Cups and Wine Glass Charms

She turns up her nose at the marker there
Which lets each family member label their red plastic cup.
Big gatherings frequently number thirty or more,
Enough to use the package contents up.
Rather than waste them by losing track
And having to get another to use,
A name printed in black saves the day
And makes one’s cup harder to lose.
“Tacky” she says with an arrogant air
And gives us the glare we know well.
She’s out in the country in body but soul-
Wise she’s really a big city swell.

Offer All

Make it an adventure,
an adventure guided
by the confines of love

And every turn
Every beat of your heart
Must see and say
And sing it softly

Just enter, -total!
glorious!
and without reserve,
saying, "I show all"

Ooh! and to offer all
To offer all!
O sweet, sweet heart
Could you offer all!

Invisibly tortured courtesy existential nihilism

Psyche wracked with agony
impossible mission to extricate lovely bones
they wanna remain permanently abed.

I chiefly function to amass knowledge
courtesy assiduously, habitually,
and judiciously reading
an eclectic assortment of written material.

Yours truly woke
with ambition, disposition,
inclination, and predilection
to glean from an assortment
of books esoteric learning
since... birth, but particularly
when experiencing emerging adulthood
about two score years ago.

Learning to fly!

Seized by a gust of wind
caught by complete surprize,
but he knew enough as well
just to hold on tight!
Up, up and away
heading towards the sky.
Umbrella clenched in death grip
he rose up four feet high.
His mother grabbed his shoe
and pulled him to her side.
Another crazy incident
that could have gone awry!

Welcome

Welcome to my suicide

To the place where I died

Put a hole through my head

A bullet is not why I am dead

Life was a nightmare in a dream

Nothing was what it seemed

Pressure falling on me like a ton

Took all of it until I was done

I tried to find myself a cure

There was only one way I was sure

Now I lay in this grave, dead

Thoughts of me in no one's head

Bonafide

I had a little peanut
I carried in my hand.
Met up with some guy, Peter,
who used it in a brand
of butter.

I had a walking stick
leaning against the wall.
A royal lad named William Mayne
used it to hit a ball
like a putter.

Canned popcorn lid, had I
that fell and became dented.
A war hero named Morrison
tossed it and then invented
the Pluto Platter.
