Calling All Workshop Leaders

Firstly, as a point of explanation, below are the definitions of a Workshop and a Program:

  • Workshop - a workshop exists for a finite time and all participants start and end at the same time.
  • Program - a program is an open ended endeavour that can last much longer.

I am focused on Workshops only at this time.

As a guideline, please review the following:

  • Goal - The workshop should have a clearly and concisely stated goal that can be achieved within the workshop time-frame
  • Length - The workshop should last only as long as required to achieve the stated goal
  • Subject Matter - The workshop should only include the subject matter required to achieve the stated goal
  • Participation - The participants in the workshop should be kept to a manageable level so that the stated goal can be achieved for all
  • Review - A review should be held at the end of the workshop to conform the goal has been reached or to identify what needs to change to reach the goal

To those who do not know me, my name is Jonathan Moore. I ran the mentor and workshop program previously and will do so for, at least, the next few months. I have seen a few ideas for workshops put forth and would like those interested in running a workshop to supply me with the following information:

  • Your name and contact information
  • The goal/purpose of your workshop in 25 words or less
  • The length of your workshop
  • The number of participants allowed to participate in your workshop
  • The closeout/ending process for your workshop (how do participants know it's over)

We are looking to start some preliminary workshops ASAP.  We will use this and previous experience to establish some general guidelines for workshops so that the concept and participation is open to as many people as possible.

Please respond to me here with only the details requested.  We're looking to jump start this concept and the more focused we can be in the initiation phase the quicker it will come together.  I will not reply to any messages that are off-topic.

A songwriting, workshop for all levels of experience. The idea is to help each other to become better writers, work on problems that people have with their writing in general, as well working on any problems with individual songs. No time limit. No limit to number of participants. There is no end, stay as long as member wishes.

A workshop for dark or taboo poetry. For those who have an interest in pushing the limits. The idea is for members to have room to experiment. No time limit or limit to participants, only need the passion. Stay as long as you deem necessary..

Stand tall, be proud to be who you are, give the world the finger!!!!

There could also be a mentor workshop , for mentors and their students, maybe there only need be two or three mentors , who decide on who can join the workshop, the work could be posted and the mentors look at all of it and offer general help, and give home work to students. The mentors could take turns hosting a monthly chat session to for group discussion. Basically it's for those who really want to improve. There's no time limit, although mentors, can decide, if they think a student needs such intensive help.

Stand tall, be proud to be who you are, give the world the finger!!!!

Thank you for the ideas and interest, we are trying to ensure the workshop concept is both inclusive and helpful to participants under the outlines listed above.

If you could both take a moment to recast your ideas in the workshop format, we can start more concrete planning.

The information above is a starting place for planning and running workshops, not a final ruling. Ideas, critique, and suggestions are welcome.

The goal/purpose of your workshop in 25 words or less: An 'exercise or idea' workshop wherein Poets are encouraged to try different exercises, which would lead, not necessarily to a completed poem, but at least the basis for a poem.

The length of your workshop: One week per Exercise. It would be ongoing.

The number of participants allowed to participate in your workshop: Unlimited

The closeout/ending process for your workshop (how do participants know it's over): Day 7, submit poems based on exercise and submit thoughts on effectiveness of the exercise.

Thank you,

As I have been a bit out of the loop here I still do read and offer whatever I can and I think this is another wonderful idea Lisa has here. Actually one I totally am agreement in as it would be a much needed help to and exercise to anyone wanting to hone their skill or learn many ways to help them in their journey as a writer.

Blessings friend Lisa

As has been evidenced in the past, we all have unexamined beliefs that I believe thwart our ability to be the best poets we can be. It is that place in which we find our own limitations that births the poet....transcending time and matter, and what the matter is with time and one another.

Bring your unexamined beliefs, thoughts, inclinations, presumpions and assumptions. Let's see how we can assist one another in overcoming our fears. How to set boundaries AND to remain open-minded and open-hearted.

It is a process that evolves with each person joining in the process.

1. This must be an on-going discussion/workshop without limitations of membership and without any sort of censorship.
2. Bring your insights and your prejudices, your strengths and your weaknesses.
3. The group will act as a beehive or not.

I do, however, have questions as to what to name it. Any ideas?

Bee Hive Nothing or Bee Hides Nothing

Beyond Everything or Beyond Nothing

Just my thought to Anna'a ideas here. Coffee got to kick in this morning..

Ciao Bella Anna

if you kick this off I'm in. just let me know when and where.

-living always in the now!-

I have written some pieces that I have been told is a song and I know this is work and I would love to really one day be able to do this and just gain knowledge in the know how to. A poem is a lyric as in many songs that is just what it is Poetry In Motion

Just my thoughts and good morning to you and Lonnie

Are great and thought out wonderful. We will see how the wind blows.

Blessings to the entire Neopoet family

I would be interested in being a part of your workshop,
did you have any other rules for the poem, like, line length,
form, any specific imagery? Were you planning on making
a list of overused words, would the final draft be critiqued
by the group?

i liked the concept and ideas being shared here and would look forward to the announcements of these workshops...would they be published in the newsletter?...

raj (sublime_ocean)
