Victimized...

She flies into a rage
when he addresses her needs
Simply put, she wants to be alone
He minds, but knows enough not to say so

She knows that she is being unreasonable
but in the moment, she doesn't care
Her pain causes flashbacks
And he is there, a target for her barbs

It is unfortunate, that she cannot "just get over it"
He loves her more on her 'good days'
but, tries hard on the bad ones too
A victim, quite by circumstance

Each time, he consoles himself with
it's not always like this
tomorrow will be a better day
Without much conviction, but it is all he has

Excellent free verse write Geez. As for the content, this is a very melancholy read, but one can feel the desperation to hold on to what they (you?) have, regardless of the bad parts of the relationship. I have been here on more than one occasion. Made me think of Percy Sledge's When A Man Loves A Woman. Thanks for sharing.

Sometimes, when things are difficult in our relationship, I remember that the person I love, is there under the mask of anger at herself and the world and it is truly not me that she is having difficulty with. I admit that I am not the easiest to live with...
I forget to perform some of my functions as a partner in the household, [taking out the garbage, for one] and I am often so immersed in my own projects that I forget about time. She has the most wonderful laugh and she is compassionate and giving. She is very capable of many things and often surprises me with some of her views. I love her beyond anything I have ever loved and she has taught me many things. Yes, that song is very apt and I have heard it in my head when dealing with an episode of hurt. We have just celebrated our 32nd year of marriage last month and forty-one years of our relationship. ~ Geez.

I must admit, I have been in the same place of the poem's subject. Melancholy for sure. A kind soul that wants to hang on to try and make things work. I see power being given away and confusion over where to place boundaries. A most important subject. It definitely resonates.

of those poems that started out to be about someone and something else. As it happens sometimes, it got away from me and went it's own way. Just had a little bump in the day and the wife was angry that she hurts, [her back is bad and she tends to be a bit snippy when she hurts]. It came at the same time that I was writing said poem about someone else who has let a couple of bad relationships turn her against all men and she simply cannot let go of the hurt. She cannot see that a little disagreement with a man is just that, a little disagreement; and it reinforces her belief that all men are bad! My wife is not on that level. She understands how much I love her and will go back to being her same sweet self. Thank you for your comments and the feeling that you have been there. ~ Geezer.
