Tides of passage

So much water has passed under the bridge
With it a part of me
Her soul drifted with the tides
Now in conclave with my father

Tales of ancestors are now sweeter
Rites of passage with a touch of your hands
Not one that ashed immigrants denigrated
Morning yet on creation day
Achebe's rebuttal
Of their vague distortion of our past

My prayer with you in mind
More potent than beckoning their ancestry
Whose hands we never shook
Or knew our pains or our laughter

Well as for us here
We are in passage of purgatory
Certain of a better afterlife
Case of granite covering a tombstone
Of mortals overlooking it
And flowers and greenery around it
Of tides and streams beyond
Passage

Last few words:
Reflection of a poet over some loved ones who have passed on; of the comfort and assurance they are in a better place interceding for us mortals, irrespective of what other schools of thought hold about it; of my strong belief of life in eternity; and that some day we will all take our place in the afterlife.

Good write!
Poetically assuming afterlife... It's African way of keeping our beloved ones by engraving them in our heart.
I like the flowing of the words.

"Words are currency of ideas and have the power to change world. Ride your pen on the rough road."

Much appreciated Joghe. To live in the hearts of those we love is not to die. This piece is a way of me keeping alive the memories of my loved ones, particularly my late younger sister and dad.

It’s darn smooth. The free verse stuff can be difficult to attach the pace or rhythm to without speaking it. I feel like this one has an obvious pace. Your line breaks all make perfect sense which is a big part of it I think. I’m sorry for the loss of loved ones. It is also my belief that there is something else after “life” here.

Well done
Tim

Hi Tim, thank you for your time and appreciation of the piece. You know, I hardly considered the pace, rhythm and all that stuff. Was just caught in the mood to pour out my thoughts and get some relief. Happy to hear that it all came out well!
