mossy stones
slippery,
roots like steps,

the sudden rush
of a squirrel up a nearby
fir tree,

a cormorant sitting silent
at the end of a wooden pier;

the cry of a bird of prey

one leaf dances down,
glancing on branches
as it falls,

yellow birch leaves
caught like treasure,
gold,

the calm water,
ballroom of trees
reflected across the lake.
