The Red & White Blues

Change is on it's way
like a surely adolescent
the Blue is on the
ascendant

Blue is on it's way
all grown up
suddenly needs to
stand tall and sway

With the beating heart
of independence!

So, you want to leave home?
Go alone
eat your pauper price
enjoy the fatted federal fruits?

Enjoy the party whilst you can
the hangover
in Hanover
will waste your Highland hubris

And what of your family Union?

Like an empty-nester
they'll cry when you've left
but practical parents
will paint your room a new hue
for another guest...

Last few words:
Scottish Independence...a debate

An adolescent has left home, over-due and ungrateful. A timeless story, well told.
Some small suggestions-

Change is on it's way
surely adolescent
the Blue is on the
ascendant

Blue is on it's way
all grown up [the apparent internal illogic is surely apt]
suddenly needs to
stand tall and sway

So, you want to leave home?
Go alone
eat your pauper price
enjoy the fatted federal fruits?
[this sounds embittered and like breath bated for an "I told you so", probably also apt.]

For some reason the last stanza is an exact representation of "Little Alex's" homecoming in "A Clockwork Orange". A sad, and haunting piece with more 'Schaden' than 'freund'.

cheers,
Jess

Hi Jess,

Thanks for the review...yes, I prefer your opening stanza arrangement.

The debate is hotting up over Scotland having a referendum to decide it's future. The analogy of a sulky teen desperate for adult freedom is surely not lost on most of us. Admitting your parents were right about most things sticks in the craw...Scotland wants to be "all grown up"...it will realise, once the celebration & hoohaha die down, they will have to make some grown up decisions over revenue raising, taxes and which world "club' they want to ally themselves to.

The world order is shifting like sand around us...interesting times.

The English press is more concerned with what will happen to the Union Jack flag if Scotland go alone. It is unquestionably the best "brand' in the world; an iconic symbol of the best bits about the union isles.

Ells :)

I wonder if the jack can be hung upside down with the removal of the St Andrews Blue cross??
It is one of my pet hates that people don't know which way their flag should be hung.
There is another silly point where is the border that separates Scotland from England, will it be the Roman one and who is responsible for the repair of the wall, then which wall, Hadrians or the other one, Newcastle may have to be split into two parts.
What a total bloody mess, and who the hell ever thought that anyone in their right mind would want separation, there is no place in the UK that you can draw a boundary between the Scots and the English it is as said, a United Kingdom.
I will bet a wee pound. Scottish or English that it will not happen.
If for some mental reason it does can I be a border passport checker and live up there one foot in Scotland and the other in England, where ever it may be lol, if they make an alliance with China then, well the mind Boggles..
