Perspective

You say "it's on the inside that counts"
and act as though that's a good thing.
So go ahead then, look at my painful,
scary, hateful, heart wrenching, thoughts
and look into my teary eyes. look at my brown
eyes, eye brow edges curled with sadness,
and tell me that because my insides are
terrifying I should die. Tell me that I'm
crazy.

Why do we say this? Are we that
stupid as to think that all insides
are good? Are we that stupid
as to think that we should say
this tp people who are afraid to be
judged? Because all I hear from
that statement is judgement.

You say that words are only words,
or "sticks and stones wont break my
bones but your words will never hurt me"
to be more specific. Yet, we
all get in fights because of WORDS.
We all get in trouble because of
WORDS. We all get hurt because
of WORDS. Well, I guess it just
depends on the perspective, but
where I'm standing, I'm terrified.

any number of sayings that describe what I want to say, but I think that this one describes it best.
It is an old Native American adage and it goes: "Do not judge another man until you have walked in his moccasins." You might ask how this pertains to what your poem is about and I would say that; it's a matter of perspective. If you do not know what another person is feeling, how can you help them to change it? I hope that anyone that feels like you describe, will understand that the many people that repeat the saying of "It's what is on the inside that counts" are trying to comfort a person and do not understand your "Perspective". I think that you have done a very good job of describing a person that is fearful of other's judgment, one that feels that the emotions hidden inside, are too different and scary, to show. Your title fits and the theme is good. The flow is great and I read it straight through without stopping to examine any particular part. The one piece of advice I can give to that person in the poem is, look around here and see that there are many people that write of their own troubles and sometimes their triumphs. Writing about things that bother us, things that we feel we are alone with. This site is made to share these thoughts and teach a poet how to be better at sharing them in a way that resonates with the reader. ~ Geezer.
