Old Leather Heart..

Old Leather Heart..

What ails you now old leather heart,
like me can you not bear her grieving.
From one that’s always been a part,
of my joys, or sadness when leaving.

You loved her as did I my friend,
she did so brighten our dreary lives.
We must remain on task until it’s end,
a pledge, made on blood wet knives.

We’ve travelled far and seen so much,
but left a great many comrades behind.
Terrible times we’ve had lives to touch,
on a hard road not marked nor signed.

But friends have come to soon gone,
some blown away by winds of change.
Still you and I together journey on,
to driest desert or rain soaked range.

After victory perhaps to lie on a soft bed,
you know we’ll never be allowed to fail.
And if by chance one of us two is dead,
then I fear the others celebrations pale.

Say for them we win their taste of freedom,
will they speak of old leather heart or others.
Who’ll say our sacrifice’s worth a kingdom,
praise more that all remained as brothers.

Shed tears at the departure of sweet maiden,
then pray we’ll see her more in this lifetime.
Gather strength off words we’ve heard spoken,
afore two days trek then our last mountain climb.

But a life you’ve given me old heart,
reciprocated I hear you begin to beat.
Then hearing at once the bugler’s start,
I’ll now protect my leather heart’s retreat

I like your title and your rhyming pattern. I found the flow to be smooth and easy, as I was not distracted when reading. This theme touched me deeply. I loved these lines most:

But a life you’ve given me old heart,
reciprocated I hear you begin to beat.
Then hearing at once the bugler’s start,
I’ll now protect my leather heart’s retreat

Poignant, especially as this Sunday, we'll be remembering fallen service personnel...I thought it flowed very well.

'Betty'

Never thought of it in relation to any particular time, but i'm proud you associated my poem with Sunday the 11th. Thank you very much. Love Roscoe...
