MID-SPRING EVE

Sitting on the deck out back
a glass of red wine in our hands
as spring wind varies stiff to slack
blackberry winter stalks the land

Your fine hair lifts and flits about
as season's zephyrs stir the air
my scalp chills where hair fell out
I guess we must look quite the pair

Limbs which quivered without leaves
now garbed, toss and tumble 'round
showing new resistance to fresh breeze
they make a soothing rustling sound

Blue patches drift through cloudy sky
as sunlit patterns cross the land
the evening peepers start their cry
you reach out and take my hand

Now half-masked sun sinks in the west
and shadows cool the end of day
sending the courting doves to nest
honeysuckle scent now drifts our way

We get a wet well lit surprise
a sunshower racing 'cross the pond
'ere it gets here we both arise
thus breaking our silent bond
and rush inside with laughing eyes
