Jimmy Carter Was a Goober (In All the Best Ways)

Jimmy Carter was a goober
who didn't stand a chance
between the perpetually lame duck Ford
and the Juggernaut Reagan.

I watched TV one morning
when Jimmy was president
and even as a boy thought
"what a fine man this is."

Now I don't know
if he was up to the task.
I was so young
when he was swept out of office,
but he seemed like the kind of guy
I'd want to grow up to be like.

Jimmy, Jimmy,
we didn't give you half a chance;
yet there you were
at the end of it all
with that Georgia smile
and unabashed humility.
We turned on you
when you wouldn't swim
with the same sharks
we asked you to rescue us from.

Review Request (Intensity):
I want the raw truth, feel free to knock me on my back
Review Request (Direction):
What did you think of my title?
How was my language use?
What did you think of the rhythm or pattern or pacing?
How does this theme appeal to you?
How was the beginning/ending of the poem?
Last few words:
Goober, while some consider to be a mild put down is also a nickname for the peanut, of which Jimmy Carter was a farmer. While many people considered him to be one of the worst presidents in United States history I've always had a deep admiration for the man who was thrust into the national spotlight and into a position he really never aspired to due to the rampant corruption in politics.

The Iranian hostage affair cost Carter his job. He was a very intelligent and kind man. He was also, unlike Bill Clinton, a shining example of a southern gentleman. But the presidency was never meant for such men. One must be ruthless when dealing with congress and willing to fight for what he wants done. Thus in my opinion although he was a fine man until Obama came along he was the worst president in my memory.
Now on to the poem lol. I think you did an excellent job in getting your ideas across.......stan
