I Knew Him Not, I Know Him Now (Englyn Penfyr)

I walk each welcome morning ~ if I can.
I met a man adorning
A cloak, he gave no warning.

No warning of his being ~ not at all,
I heard him call, him seeing
My inhibitions fleeing.

"You may stare with wide fixed eyes" ~ said he now,
"I shall tell how you may rise
With me as I am the wise".

I felt my heart was lifted ~ up above
To where no love has existed
And where my soul had drifted.

Who was this knave before me? ~ eyes aglow.
I could not know, could not see,
Blind to who, then, may be he.

I now and then, all the same ~ do know him.
Light may be dim thus he came.
Yea! but Satan knows his name.

You made this look easy Alan. Your theme had an eerie feel to it. I enjoyed this very much

Thanks for sharing and taking part

Kindest regards

This style of englyn penfyr is, I think, more native to Cornwall than Wales but very similar. The rhyme of the first line is at 4 of the second. This type of poetry takes a lot of thinking about as do other styles (of which there are many).
I hope that you are enjoying this workshop (I think you are), Sam works hard at it and, of course, all credit to her for her glowing guidance.

Critique is a compliment
Kind regards, Alan

author comment

She really does do wonders Alan. I feel I am learning from her and enjoying it too. She is a natural teacher. It’s been lots of fun and yes difficult at times. But the challenge makes it all more inviting and appreciative when you get that end result.

Can’t wait to learn more

Kindest regards
