Girl in the Meadow

In early spring, through melting snow,
Snowdrops raised their tear shaped heads.
No longer caws the crow her wintry dirge,
groundhogs, too, stirred from their beds.

Flocks of birds of every feather
sing in the greening meadow,
above the small girl’s lonely corpse
strangled by some depraved fellow.

Her pain distorted features still
belie this Spring’s festivity;
the fastened rope around the neck
speaks of the killer’s vile proclivity.

Of the murderer—still no trace,
no single clue has yet been found--
just some scattered early flowers
that raise their heads from thawing ground.

Oh Jerry, that's horrible about the young girl. Sadly, it's happenning all the time. In Argentina, about one woman in 36 hours is killed, often by a family member, or else some psychopath. I hear that with the pandemic, killing is more frequent.
The title, rhyme and content of your poem is perfect, no crits from me. All the blossoming of Spring is fantastic...then you reveal the corpse. For a moment, I read "copse", which would have been lovely.
All the best, Gracy

of the beauty of Spring and the little girl's corpse; face grimaced in pain, makes this scene all the more gruesome. In some ways, even more than any of my Killer works. You show the worst of mankind, bar none. I will take this one to be a true story,
and your sadness at the cruelty of a killer. Well done, ~ Geezer.

Your Killer's work? Aha! now we have a suspect! Yes, unfortunately it is true. The case is still open. See my reply to Gracy. Thanks. Jerry

if Killer had caught him, there would have been no need for a lynching. Killer is not the kind who brutalizes little girls. He only kills bad people and the killing of an innocent little girl would go against his principals. As a matter of course, this is the sort of thing that makes Killer what he is; an avenging Angel bent on destroying these monsters. ~ Geezer.

horrible is the word. I happened to be a member of the mounted Sheriff's posse involved in the search for the girl. I swear, had we caught that fellow, there might have been a lynching. Well, he got away. Yes, too much of this sort goes on. Thanks for commenting.
All the best to you, too. Jerry

This is truly heartbreaking, which makes it hard to read. You have, however, created a profound poem. Your last two lines offer a bit of comfort and compassion.
Thank you,
