A Gentleman's Muse...

A Gentleman's Muse....

Feeble men we are that stand idly by,
while children suffer on our docile watch.
Don’t we care when we hear them cry?
as the soldier’s gun earns another notch.

Oil they say is it more important than a life,
won’t be that when it runs out and their cold.
I also need it’s money to keep my lovely wife,
clothes, jewellery, all investments, so I’m told?

Well is our own life more precious than their’s?
or are we mesmerised by a political side show?
Could be we’re to concerned about grey hairs,
after all we only ever use wash our hands and go. ( chortle)

As armies pronounce more ground is gained,
buildings get smashed along with skin and bones.
Feral men beat their drums till the oil’s drained,
hope we never run out of our wonderful drones?

Syria they cry, what can we really do to help?
lob a few missiles put them through some hoops.
From comfy armchairs we won’t hear them yelp,
we don’t want to lose anymore of our brave troops.

Our troops protect us and our grey hairs, eh hem! chairs,
what does it matter! we should keep them safe, here.
Let them out give them medals at our countries fairs,
then if we get protesters we’ll have nothing to fear.

So the lesson is this and I’m hoping you’ll agree,
we don’t stick our noses in where we’re not wanted.
Let Arabs or whoever help their own fight to be free,
if our people complain bring the army out, flaunt it.

The flow is a little rough for me, but that's just me. it may not be for you or others.

The theme is a relevant one as it is current, but my issue with works of this nature is that they so often attack the time period. They don't often allow the time to attack the words. I feel the poem would benefit from a slightly different perspective or perhaps additional perspectives relative to who is suffering.

My apologies if I have missed the point here.

Sorry, i was trying to portray the sort of mixed up thinking we all go through, when watching civil wars in far away countries. Especially the english gentleman type, who believes anything the television or radio says. But I'll get to work and see if i can improve this one. Thank you for your comments. Regards Roscoe...

Roscoe Llane,

Religion will rip your faith off, and return
for the mask of disbelief that's left.
