Easter Amidst Corona

By Izunna Okafor

Novelty
Novelty
Novelty
All is novelty.

Easter is here
The much awaited Easter
For our Christ is risen
Where are the Christians?

Our churches are empty
Some even are locked
As if the Christ himself
Had failed to resurrect.

Our hands are coated
Our mouths are tied
How do we celebrate?
As we're banned from gathering
hugging and shaking.

Yes the Christ is risen
But we're still in rue
Mourning and shivering
Like in the day of crucifixion.

Our hearts jiggle
And our lives at risk
An unwelcome visitor is here
His arrival changed them all.

His name is coronavirus
A voyager
A product
An inventor
all the way from China.

Easter without communion
Easter without congregation
Easter without conviviality
Novelty to the credit of another.

Corona corona corona!
That's all we hear
That's all we fear
Even on the day of resurrection.

Our sermons, our prayers
All pay allegiance to corona
Corona hodgepodged our Easter.
Corona pilfers our days.

Corona is ubiquitous
Corona is mortiferous
Easter amidst corona
All is novelty
and only but just a novelty.

What did you think of my title?
How was my language use?
What did you think of the rhythm or pattern or pacing?
How does this theme appeal to you?
How was the beginning/ending of the poem?
Is the internal logic consistent?

even he
is maintaining social distancing
playing safe
lest you hug him and hold him as ransom
o man wear a mask
play safe
Corona is still running
a rat race

you can't it chase
so with the rest keep pace

stay locked indoors
common places are not safe
play solely says the man in silence
be not deaf like me
just through one time miracles see
what must have happened years ago
all story telling
for glee
listen you too
me

the thought of many around the world. A lot of people don't understand how they can trust in the Lord, and yet not congregate in his name for the Resurrection. It's like this; you must trust in him for your soul, but in science for the body. How about the story of Jesus feeding the many with loaves of bread and fishes? He could have just made everyone not be hungry, right? Yet he fed the body. Same here, we need to realize that the body needs to be taken care of and protected. Right now, there is no better way than to maintain social distancing and keep practicing good hygiene. I found your poem to be a plea for understanding. It serves to unite us all in this time of need. Good write. ~ Geezer.
