childhood disappointment

I remember way, way back then
when first I saw television.
So Dad could judge its worth-while
one was brought to our house for a trial
by the man from Retravision.

He set it up on the back veranda
the better to be able
to run to the aerial on his truck parked outside
the thick, long extension cable.
The neighbours had all been invited
for the free viewing and showing
of the newest wonder money could buy
and the reception they could be expecting
if thinking perhaps the technology to try.

It was a beautiful balmy summer evening.
A blanket of stars slowly dawned
as into an outdoor picture theatre
the yard of our home was swiftly transformed.
We kids ran amok while all was set up
playing skip jump with the extension cable
being called now and then to carry
plates of goodies to occasional tables
and place every chair in the house in rows
on the lawn of the garden, before the TV.

From the start Mum and Aunt sat perfectly still
plates of potato chips on their knees
watching the test pattern, until
the broadcast began and we all sat through
the news, a bad movie and a doco – all boring
(at least to those of us less than four feet in height)
then just as a cartoon of Mickey’s tugboat came on
they packed up and called it a night!

one could've crawled under her chair in the garden shirl.
imagine where she'd be doing the dance then, and potato chips ?? the mind boggles

I really enjoy this a lot.
I did not watch TV until I was about 17. We didn't have one at home because my mother hated them, and when I was old enough to have my own, I had little interest.
I still don't lol, although everyone else in my family does, so occasionally I'll watch something with them. And sometimes I'll record a David Attenbourough documentary, all of which I enjoy immensely.
But in the end I would rather read a book, walk a beach, do some gardening or write poetry.

glad you enjoyed it
i'm not much of a tv fan myself - i like sci fi and documentaries, but i'm more a radio/music person
maybe my childhood disappointment scarred my tv enjoyment for life (smile)

I can't remember not having a TV lol. A very descriptive write on remembering the first experience with a new technology. Only thing I'd change is to swap perhaps and thinking in line 14..........stan

and you're correct about that line
i've changed it.
thank you

I tell you what I thought as I was reading this my baby brother just had a big birthday party for Mattie and he had a big outdoor theater with the popcorn machine and slush puppy machine. It was so nice to see the three stooges on screen and home videos to music. We will be having one next weekend as well and this story reminded me of your tv and mom and dad getting it all together for the family.

Such treasured memories you portray here and I thank you for sharing this one with us.
