To Capitalize or Not

To capitalize or not to capitalize
That is the question?
And this is my answer

Capitalizing the first letter of
Each beginning word in a line
Of poetry,  came first
It is traditional, been around
Since the beginning of poetry

But nothing stays the same
Not even poetry
And why should it?

And one day a young poet
Decided he didn't want
To capitalize,  so he didn't

Maybe he was just lazy
Or maybe he just wanted
To be different, try something new
After all it is just capitalizing
Not the end of the world

Now I was not around
When the young poet
Decided to change the rules
But I think the old
Traditional poet was not happy
And told the young poet
He was wrong

But the young poet
Stood his ground
It was his poem
And his freedom of choice

And what do you know
Not capitalizing was a hit
Out with the old
And in with the new

And there is nothing
Wrong with that
New is good
But please don't forget

We still have freedom of choice
To capitalize or not to capitalize
Neither is right and neither is wrong
And after all it is my poem

sexton....died with a slip of paper with a cruel critique
Morrison in his tub....but he rued how people did not
take to his poems or blues vend...
Williams (Hank) said they were selling his music like Balogna
Cobain grew up alone in poverty and ended up stinking
rich..cut off and alone...fighting for his daughter
Elvises mother died....losing his family...
but all were coping with drugs they could afford
Joplin the same
remembering the cruelties

U write...U stand your ground!
and U draw fire which is unique
a discipline of value
I am the cat on the fence
yowling at the moon
for his mistresses
eating from tin dustbins
scrapping with the
torn eared tabbies..

Like the Moonman above
I like U also!

I decided to be respectful and go with humor but make sure I got my point across. Of course I can't make them read it, but I feel better for writing it, and that is all that matters.

as someone raised on traditional verse, to instead apply the more common rules of grammar. I have never looked back, it was truly liberating.

it is not wrong to capitalize, nor indeed as some do, to use little or no grammatical indications in a poem. What swings it for me is, does it make it more accessible to the reader. It's not about me, I know what I mean but how does someone approaching the poem (or indeed my writing) for the first time, find it, open or closed.
