Do you want a like button or view counter?

It is against the grain for wordsmiths, poets and Neopoet.
Even a 'view' counter is against what we are about.
Excuse my language but fuck the attention seekers.
We are about helping each other improve, not mutual masturbation.
That is what keeps Neopoet utterly unique and important.
There is nothing even remotely like us anywhere on the web.

Comments

You two especially keep asking for this.
I personally say a resounding no.
Let everyone express their opinions here.

Neopoet is a Democracy. If a majority of members decide that 'like' and 'view' counters should be included then they will be.
I am speaking here as Jess, not as a Founding Member, an AC member and Advisory Team member.
And you all know that 'popularity' is not what Neopoet is about.
Chose.
I will put the forum up if agreed on by the AC and Trustees, or a general demand for a 'referendum'.

cheers,
Jess

Ok I am not really all that bothered now about counters or the number of responses poets receive on their works any more, it is as you say an ego thing.
So I will not mention this again or ask for any form of counting, thanks for your consideration on this aspect of Neopoet
I will rely on the number of comment from now on, it is a shame that the critique on works here still remains at a minimum level.
Take care young Jess and once again thanks,
Yours Ian..

why not put it to a vote by secret ballot? so no one feels intimidated to remain silent.

As with every democracy not every single decision can be made consensual, but this is something people feel strongly about.
Remembering also that we have no paid tech people, so significant structural changes would need pretty much a consensus, which changes would you like to see?

in the infancy of the site
there was spotlight..and counters
being that its a computation platform
any app can be applied

I dont think its going to affect the
qaulity or work or the want or not
want to comment on works
as we have seen with the adjustment
of the Undiscovered
anything can be initiated
set up and or removed in time
the flexibility of this site is greatly
appreciated to the rigid rules
of a lot of Pay for Sites
that mere are there
for financial washing of coin.

thank god this is not a laundromat!

Bravo Andrew Paul
thank U!

Mr Esker!

You know how much we would have to pay a tecchie to come in and do it?
How much have you ever contributed to the site?

No, we are not a laundromat, neither is anything ever done for free. Basically it costs a volunteer at least the time they could have been earning.

What changes do you want and how important are they, Esker?

Bravo is very nice, I am sure it will be appreciated by those donating their dollar value time.

the last personal dig at me via personal notes
I all got...
and now this continuing want for you against me
is tiring!

I personally in the Big real world deal with more
pressing issues like an Adult and Big person..

I wish U could spend more time on Creating your
great poetry then personal vendettas

one thing I dont contribute is swearing at people
calling them names or blaming everything else
Wind moon..spirits..God...parents..

I am tiring of it..Capiche Boy!
prolli not getting through
okay...you go play at what u do
I shall continue to write poetry
and encourage the creative heart
of the poets here
and they likewise!

and aside note..
Everyone that puts up a work
of poetry is working
and everyone commenting is
working also

sometimes throwing the wrenches
into works is not working
but sabotage

aside note also..
There are gov grants in Aussie
for artists to create their own
computer platforms for Poetry
Sites....
many great sites were started
by those with the brilliance
mind determination and vision
in such a manner
many of the business owners
I know started this way

I thank U for your work
and ask
that You try to
refrain from the petty attacks

Still doing my housework
here...ongoing...and gardening
very peaceful enjoyable work
good for the soul
its soothing
makes for less abrasive
character
I encourage it
although it is work!

thank U!

two members asked for something that we had once...
a simple..I disagree but...would be fine to hear of our
representation...but a barrage of nasty words
and then to slam others?
I dont know man...
and I dont care
but Im getting pretty
tired...(yawn) of immature
poutyness

we should put in a counter
it gives roughly an idea of
station adress
lets say like a signature book
for an art gallery
a rough idea of traffic
we are artists after all
Not mere disgruntled critics
driving artist and audience
away....
we want the place to thrive
Not die the slow death
by Ego alone!

we have Chat here
and that has all but ceased
but at one time it was a
thriving little place
what happened??

hmm

..

you would IP addresses included, Eskardely?

Neopoet has always most thrived with honest, constructive feedback, not the "very nicely put" of tea garden days. Yes, it drives away some, like the whale, who would use the word "beautiful" 5 times a stanza describing a grand-daughter's ballet, whilst spending most energy evangelising in chat.

Encouragement is great.
Brave critical feedback is what Neopoet is really about.
Why else would I have survived innumerable suspensions for calling shit "shit" without getting banned? I offer positive suggestions ranging from recommending other poetry to read, texts, specific suggestions and more.
Not just "oh good, keep writing and (99 lines of self-indulgent crap)"

Not to mention, though I must, volunteering to help keep the site running.

I liked the counter, it doesn't promote competition,
it is merely a tool, something extra one can see that
indicates reads (implies), even when not commented
on.

Richard

I have greatly admired the staunch stability
during the tenure of Your work here on our Neopoet!
so at least Four Members
are encouraging towards having a
counter.
I like the word Implies also
a most reasonable and rational
and intelligent word.

Thank U Moonman!

Your Friend Esker!

We are getting old together lol.

clearly a lot of members would like to see a view counter.
Just please remember that technical changes to the site do take time, it is not a simple twitch, we don't have a full-time tecchie.
Do you think we should have a referendum on this?
Should I post a forum on whether we should have a referendum about this?
At this stage my only objection is the tecchie load. There are a quite a few suggestions for change that can't be done without site re-writing.

Jess

All we can do is offer the suggestions,
it may still be that it can't be done or the
cost may be to high, that will have to be
determined by the Partners.

That would promote competition, but not
if it were implemented on the comment
section. Then even commenting may give
one more reason to do so.

Thank U!

we had a view counter, and like buttons. Both of which were heartily abused by poets with more talent for self-promotion than poetry.
There is only one constant contributor to this site who needs constant affirmation of having been read, who asks for it in all their critiques anyway.
Some post so often and indiscriminately that their posts contribute to 90% of the 'Undiscovered work' list.
The way to be read and seen is to read and contribute.

See, here I am re-thinking again. I'll repeat that last thought.

"The way to be read and seen is to read and contribute."

now that I know its a personal only thing from you..
(which is a no brainer) the indiscriminate part...No

so I would say that average and odd is pretty good

most of which require at least some technical adjustment to the site.
I am about to put a great deal of thought and action in to making the Forums more active and accessible, which I will propose to the AC and Trustees.
Every and all suggestions welcome.

In the mean time remember, this site has been the best and only active poetry workshop on the web for 9 years, 10 months and 20 days as at time of posting.

All we have to do at the moment is actively follow the primes directive "Critique, don't comment".
Especially longer members, show by example.
That is Neopoet.

Correct old friend there is nothing like you on the web and never will be and while you are taking suggestions here's one.

Tell them to go to their safe place and get a hug from someone who care about fragile egos and not offended someone because this was suppose to be / is a workshop not social media.

I see you have been a member now for six years and last participated in 2012.
First comment I have seen of yours on this site, maybe taking part in the sites day to day activities would be a good starting point.
There are other things beside workshops on this site, it is a community.
I hope to see some positive critique from you in the future, welcome to the 21st Centuary.
If I sound cross well take it as read, when you participate on site then your points will be more welcome,

Probably my memory is fading as I grow older, and I probably just didn't agree with his point of view.
His last poem on stream was 2012 that is four years, I have changed my name since then and the site has evolved a lot.
Still I accept your point,
