the moon and i

if you don't know the difference
between balmy and embalming then you're
probably not a poet
and you've joined the zombie parade
parroting words like definitions,
you're no pirate but you have a peg heart
and your hair is uncombed
your whiskers stiff with fish and eggs

i've loved you long enough, this i know

if you've never been a castaway
and you've never been left for dead,
you've never talked to the hand that gripped your muse
too tightly and left her speechless in your head,
you've never made peace
with the silence of evergreens
those arrows to the sky
only the wind passing through

i' love you; only the present can only howl

if you've never written
save me, I''m drowning on the desert sand,
you've probably never found an
oasis of your own, a no-man on your island
you never walked into the marketplace,
choosing which part of you to kill and
which part of you to let die,

only echoes live in the shadow world
only lovers listen, dressed in silver,
white,and dirge black, sometimes poppy-red,
never cornflower blue

you've never heard the moor's lament
you've never stood on the white cliffs of Dover,
you've never heard Cathy and Heathcliff whispering,
you've never been six feet from the edge,
wondering

I am always at odds with my oldest sister at this poem brought her to my mind. I understand her far too well, yet she doesn't even try to understand me. A lonely situation. I liked these lines:

you've never heard the moor's lament
you've never stood on the white cliffs of Dover,
you've never heard Cathy and Heathcliff whispering,
you've never been six feet from the edge,
wondering

always, Cat
