In Contempt

There are people rising now,
millions fighting back
against decades of poverty
and contemptuous oppression.

There are men and women rising
fighting for the futures
of their children,
marching into muzzles
of aimed and loaded guns.

There are ordinary citizens rising,
flooding into battered cities
braving snipers and beatings
to gain what we enjoy.

There are people praying
amid this monumental struggle,
thanking God for life
as others seek their death,

and then there's us:
whining about fanaticism,
terrified of change, complaining
about the rising price
of oil and gasoline.

stanza 4, line 4...
no apostrophe needed in others

i think "death" ...not "deaths" (not 100% sure)

this write really struck a chord with me...
i've not long finished watching the news
update on what's happening in libya

have followed the situation in egypt

how can we, in these privileged western countries,
dare bitch and moan about our trivialities?

great title for this piece

last stanza...first line
maybe to add to the tone of contempt,
"and then,
there is us"

just a thought

cheers
p

You're right on the money with your criticism, I agree, all are added. Thank you.
I don't have any problem with bitching and moaning...so long as you're bitchng and moaning about how long our own governments have supported these tyrants and murderers in order to keep We The People placated with cheap oil prices and transportation fuel. It sickens me, when I think of the billions of dollars my own government has given people like Mubarack and Ali and Saleh, in order to keep their fellow citizens under their iron fists.
I am forced to ask myself, who are the real tyrants, you know?
Glad that you enjoyed this,

We've been spoiled children most of our lives, I thought with the sudden downward cycle of the common folk here in the USA we would have had more empathy. Instead we elected Republicans.

Thanks for the poem, Jim. Sooner or later Americans will take up the cause and the powers that be will have to start speaking the truth. We won't be denied!

I asked the woman cutting my hair last Friday what she thought of the revolution in Egypt and Tunisia. This was a day or two before the good folks of Lybia started their revolution.

She didn't know there WAS a revolution in Egypt. She thought Tunisia was a city, not a nation.

I don't think americans are spoiled children. I think they are ignorant, sometimes wilfully, and deliberately kept that way by leaders who over the decades have provided Panem et Circenses in lieu of education, indocrinated most of us into believing that debt is not slavery, and hold the Great Unwashed who supposedly vote them into office in a studied contempt that leaves me breathless with disbelief.

This american citizen earnestly hopes that the pardyne shift taking place across the Arab world visits the shores of my own battered nation.
Sooner, rather than later.
Thanks Anna, I am glad that you enjoyed my little rant.

It is all I wish for from poetry.

One thing I would work into it, if I could, is that the blame is mostly on the International Monetary Fund and the USA. 40 years ago these nations had health and social security, nut much wealth, true. THE IMF made it a condition on loans that social security be cut back and military and police spending increased.

Does that raise a few words like fascism and outright evil power-mongering to you? They want to control these nations in order to exploit them.

At the risk of sounding like a conspiracy theorist, just ask who profits? Who seeks world domination? (and it's not the Jews, certainly not the Muslims,or even the USA, per se. it is Corporate Capitalism)

ps sorry for not commenting on the poetic techniques,, I was enthralled by the content

You made me smile, my friend.
It is endlessly fascinating to me, that people like you and I, possessed of such opposing beliefs on so many societal, cultural and political issues, can agree on so many things.
And we so do agree, on the IMF.
As many bad things as you can say about the IMF, the reality is so much worse. If there is such a thing as Satan, the International Monetary Fund is his left hand, causing untold and systemic disruption, social upheaval, economic devastation and human suffering on a global scale. The IMF is the direct descendant of european colonialism, specifically designed to replace conquest and subsequent paternalistic national indenture with permanent impoverishment of everyday citizens and their so-called nations, in order to provide cheap raw materials, and an uneducated and therefore permanently hungry and cheap labor pool to feed the so-called "developed" nations' economies, while at the same time rewarding the autocrats and, yes, fascist leaders, with vast amounts of wealth at the expense of their own people.
And I'm a fucking anarcho-capitalist, a died-in-the-wool private ownership motherfucker, and I know this to be true.
There is not one single nation - not one - that has ever done "business" with the IMF - "business", what a fucking joke THAT is - and has not had serious social unrest, huge economic problems, and large increases in poverty, as a result. I challenge anyone to name one country that has not.
The revolution and uprising we are seeing in the Middle East is the direct result of we in the west supporting murderers, thieves and cultural rapists as national leaders and heads of state, and I for one am overjoyed that these good folks are at last rising up to claim the rights that we enjoy and take for granted. It will mean huge changes for us, and permanent ones, but who cares - freedom is breaking out: as an anarchist, I find this a thing of real beauty.

As for the "jewish conspiracy", lmao, what a fucking joke that is. The very idea that 13 million people control the destinies and lives of 7 billion others is just...laughable.

LOL sorry about the rant, but I can't help it, the IMF is truely evil.

A final thought:
In the midst of their struggle, some of the muslim people of Egypt, faced with thugs and guns and injury and death, paused for Friday prayers.
Their christian brothers and sisters saw this, and formed a wall of living flesh and bone, to protect their fellow citizens as they knelt before God.
I mean, shit, they stopped fighting to PRAY, and others protected their right to do so.
Now THAT'S what I fucking call civilization, right there, heehee. There's hope for us yet, my friend.

Glad you enjoyed my write, Jess.

We have our differences but compassion, love and understanding count for so much more.

I suffer (and sometimes benefit) from deep clincical depression, with times of manic creativty (it;s called Bipolar type2) so often I just can't read the papers or watch the news, especially when they are owned by fuckwits like Murdock (Murdock the news murderer)

So I look for other sources of information, and there are many.

Thanks for your reply wjich really made my day.

Have you seen my post (it's not really a poem)

In the end, civilization will mean how in touch humanity was/is with spirituality....our common connection as children of the universe. We all share the same *life force*.

Perhaps we are beginning to awaken to that en masse.

As a side note, most in America are spoiled...most have no clue...some of it we can *blame* on the government and education, but most of it we can share responsibility for.... *the information is out there, always should we seek it.*.... Actually it's hidden inside each and every one of us.
We're just too preoccupied with our toys while the rest of the world is too preoccupied with survival.

~A

I think that in the end, our civilization will be measured, in part, by the freedom each person has to choose what to believe. Given that choice, most choose spirituality. Our own nation shows this, I think.

And they choose freedom, as recent events clearly show.

Okay now first of all, stop calling Rupert Murdoch a fuckwit.

You insult fuckwits all across the globe.

;)

Our friend Rupert doesn't murder the news, he tortures it until it screams what he wants it to, then stands back and says "What? What did I do? What?" He is a large part of the reason I never get my news from TV.

I know bipolarism intimately. I have only "winter blues" myself, but I have been called upon a couple of times over the years to help find my brother, who suffers from the disease, when he stopped taking his medication, and took off for parts unknown in the scottish highlands. Since he and I both shared the same favorite childhood places, I always knew where he would go, heehee. My father also suffered from it - self medicated with alcohol - and my great grandfather took his own life in a suspected bout of bipolar depression.

And rant away brother, any time you want. If you didn't, you would not be who you are.

I read your poem, and thought it very powerful. But you know me, I seldom comment on poetry I think excellent, and find no fault with.

On being human (I've told this tale before, but it bears repeating, and its one of my favorites)...
The first white men to reach the deep interior of New Guinea were a group of Australian anthropologists and other scientists.
The native people they discovered there had been cut off from the rest of humanity for thousands of years.
At that first meeting, the native folks thought the whites were demons, because of their grotesquely pale skin color.
But then the white "demons" smiled, and the natives knew that these were men like they were: strange, yes, scary, absolutely, but human nonetheless, possesed of the same compassion, love and capacity for happiness as themselves.

heehee I love that one.

My life was the opposite: my earliest memories are of the pain a supposed loved one can inflict upon a child, mentally and physically. Years later I discovered that although the world was still largely comprised of evil shit, there were people in it who gave a rat's ass about me.
I ended up marrying one of them, and was transformed, heehee.
High school for me: being locked up for six years...for being a child.
When I went to my first meeting with my eldest son's primary teacher, it was the first time I had been inside a school in over 20 years...and I had a visceral reaction, shaking, nauseated, and so angry I had to leave, lol. Then I had to go back, and apologize to the poor woman.

The USA is changing too, and not for the better, at least, not yet. Take a look at how the state of Arizona tried to, and is still trying to, gut our constitution.
But I think positive change is inevitable, as decent people realize what is going on. I just hope we can make this change without too much bloodshed: I'm too old to be anything but cannon fodder, but I have young sons, and a daughter, and I would rather they not have to fight.
LOL provoking is what poet's do, when needed!
Glad you enjoyed my write, Oz Lady.

i could connect instantly with the theme of this write as well as the contrasts you have built into it which is very thought provoking, if not it should be thought provoking..especially for those who enjoy freedom and democracy and take it for granted...losingsight of the larger picture of which we are a part...

warmly..

raj (sublime_ocean)

Yes, for far too long we in the west have seen our freedom and democracy as being dependant on denying it to millions of others for the sake of "security".
That I will live to see the day when millions of newly free people line up at polling places to elect representatives from every walk of life delights me, and makes me proud of my fellow human beings. And such people as these who now struggle never take their hard-won freedoms for granted. I know and respect some of those who have become citizens of the USA, and they are fierce in their defense of our rights and freedoms, here in the States. They are part of the great strength of my country.
Now we will see that strength spread to a wider population.
Glad you enjoyed my write, Raj, Thank you.

I don't get my news from TV now at all, either, as I believe that all of it is hideously biased. I need at least three different sources from around the world that tell me the same thing about a certain subject before I'll believe any of it, and I'm not talking msnbc, cnn, or fox either, all of which I wouldn't give you a rat's ass for. Usually I get my news from AP, or Reuters, the BBC, CBC, Al Jazeera, AllAfrica.com and others, these days!
Glad you liked this one so much.

Is this poem about the troubles in Libya? In any case a very brave and worthwhile piece. Personally I find it difficult to write this kind of piece, political poetry. I love to read it though and have respect for you for writing it. If only the newspapers and magazines would print poems like these instead of the lies they tell.

Nice work. John

Yes, this is in part about Libya, the struggles in the Middle East more in general.
I seldom write overtly political poetry, as I think most politics is just complete garbage, heehee. But the folks in the Middle East have impressed me mightily, for the most part forcing change relatively peacefully, and with a minimum of bloodshed, even in the face of dictatorial governmental threat and violence.
Libya...well the situation apalls me, and this is for those people too.
What really disgusts me, is our western reaction to what's happening in that part of the world, which most of my fellow citizens could not even point out on a map, let alone tell you who was doing what and how.
Glad you enjoyed this one, John.

As an anarchist, I absolutely love what the Libyan people are doing, freeing themselves from a dictatorial, murderous clan of filthy thugs.
As a humanist, it sickens me, that anyone has to die while doing it.
But as a realist, I know most human beings aren't capable of existing peaceably with each other without Law, so I hope and pray that folks in Libya can find such Law, and still retain the freedom they deserve.
Thanks for you kind words about my poem, Warrior Princess.
