Uploading/Download Audio to the site

On many occasions I wished there would be a possibility or an easy way to upload/download an audio to the site.

There are many sites on the net that would let you upload your audio and then have a link where you would only paste to the site and download it, but I know this is a long process and many will find it a time-consuming.

Why do we need an audio?

I thought it is vital in a workshop like the one we are running now about Meter. Imagine how easily Wesley would reach his target of reading the meter in the correct way accenting and unaccenting the right syllable if he only could upload an audio with his voice to the participants. I think this would be for miles easier and much more efficient.

A big part of poetry to me has always been the music, the vocalization, the actual performance of the poetry. I suggested this when I was in the AEC and was told it was not possible at the time. I am all for it. It would be such an enhancement to the substantial and rich applications we have on Neopoet.

Spoken word and instruction could be so valuable. Think of the learning and creative possibilities. We could create our own spoken word...add music to our written word....I am all for it...

but can you do it Rula? I will be no help at all. In fact I will have to be led by the hand in the process when it is up and running. Computer illiterate doesn't begin to cover me.

"Quoth said the Raven, NEVERMORE"

The pre-crash Neopoet had spoken word option and it was great to hear a few poets' voices. I am given to understand that this is no tiny thing to accomplish technically and I expect it's a tad expensive to set up. I expect it will be reintroduced as resources permit..................stan

Facebook
http://www.youtube.com/
http://yourlisten.com/
http://www.chirbit.com/
http://vocaroo.com/
and I'm sure there are many others. I don't know which are best.

The biggest difficulty I envisage is for those less technically inclined to be able to actually do the recording, upload it and then post a link to their poem on Neopoet.

Anyone up for the challenge of evaluating the best site for our purposes and running a workshop teaching people how to do it all? Many of us will have microphones built into laptops or other devices, or possess mike/earphones, otherwise an investment in a microphone might be needed.

Any volunteers?

Jess

Jess, many thanks for the sites you've provided and for supporting.
I've checked the last two and found them really great. Very easy to
use. One of them would ask you to create an account but it wouldn't
take more than two minutes. If Andrew could make a direct link to one
of them, we won't need any further equipment and I believe it wouldn't
cost the Neo much. We might only need the site's permission to put a
link to their site.
The instructions are very easy. I don't think we shall need to run any
workshops but I can make a blog with some pictures to illustrate the
steps if needed.
Who is in charge to reach Andrew to explain this? Is it the AC's ?

I see here an enticement to get "freeloaders" like me to up their status to paying membership. Perhaps make this a paying members only perk? If memory serves that is what it was on previous site............stan PS would be fun to hear all the accents spoken by all of our members. Of course I have no accent since I speak in unaccented southern English........................stan

Workshop might be fun...complete with background music...speaking in rhythm....

she has committed to aworkshop to teach everyone how to post their poems as audio and teach us how to link them to their Neopoet poems.

She is the very best on this site at explaining this sort of thing.

But have patience, she has asked for two weeks, so keep this workshop running then watch it explode into a new dimension.

I am tremendously excited.

My decrepit computer lost its sound long ago. A good reason to replace it.............stan

and plug it into the sound jack.

By the way, I noticed your comment about not being a Premium member yet. Let me take this opportunity to shame you publically, a prominent and important member of this site not supporting it financially and reaping the benefits. If we were in an English Private school I would have you caned on your rear end.

My computer used to have audio and indeed it has 2 audio jacks. But during that extended period when I was offline due to a virus attack the audio was the one thing which didn't get restored. And now as I look at my antique keyboard (previous one went kaput) I don't even see a volume control or button anywhere.
Now as to not being a premium member. i chastize myself enough about that without being piled upon. You might be aware we are just now emerging from a bit of an economic downturn over here. And i just happen to be a small time builder whose business dropped to almost 0 for a while. I'm just now getting close to caught up with bills. So with a bit of luck I might be able to shake a few dollars loose for Neo within the next few months.
PS that cane would have to be pretty big to match my , harumph , "more than adequet" rear end. BTW, guess I'll try plugging a set of earphones into the sound jack but I have little hope that it will work...............stan

Brilliant idea. Looking forward to it! I'll be able to hear your voices! Cool.

Love Mand xx - I'm off to catch a train - see you next week if not before.

This could make for some very interesting dark poetry put to word and music....

I will trust your judgement in which site to use so we can all be on the same "page" and follow the same instructions.
The advantage of a workshop is that everyone can test and post as they go without creating an infinite thread.

spoken word and slam poetry is my FAVORITE form of art, by far. i think that a video component (perhaps using youtube would be the simplest way?) would be amazing. even simply audio would be a huge improvement. i agree that the learning opportunities would expand immensely, as spoken word has a style and feel completely belonging to itself. whoever wants to take this on has my full support, and i will help wherever i can - whether directing workshops or helping with technology! of course this is an old discussion thread, but with the new AC it should be brought back to light!!

looking forward to it,

mag

and settled on Soundcloud or Vocaroo for sound only and Youtube for videos.
With Soundcloud you can upload a pre-recorded sound file, Vocaroo you can record direct or upload. For recording to your computer Audacity is free and very good.

When it comes to getting your microphone and audio software all happening and working it's a case of try it, play with it and RTFM*.

I've been posting my readings of my own and other peoples poetry for a while now and I'm a bit disappointed that no-one else has tried it.

If we want any chance of running an audio slam, spoken word workshop or audio chat (we could do that with a Skype conference call) everyone must get themselves up to speed on the technicalities. I have not the time, patience, energy or inclination to run an audio help desk

Let's do it!

People invariably comment that it is not only pleasurable but useful to hear their work in another's voice yet not one has returned the favour. I'm starting to wonder if poets might be selfish, self-involved ungrateful bastards.
