Spending Some Time With Me Dad!

When I spent time with me dad,
I tell no fibs, this is what I had!
On day one, he gave me on a plate
A chicken salad “out of date”.

It’s the truth! I tell no lies,
I tried to conceal my bulging eyes
when he presented me with this grub,
slopped out of a hot sweaty tub.

I tried to suppress a yuck!
upon seeing the mountain of muck.
“eat up”, he said, with a toothless grin
“come on, now, it’s time to tuck in”.

I looked at the soggy mess,
of mouldy apple, chicken and cress.
Even the slugs would break down and weep!
and they like putrid compost heap!

I thought, I’d rather eat chum,
‘til he whipped out a bottle of rum,
to which; I swiftly lined me dry throat
whilst he flicked the T.V remote.

Thus we sat, both him and me
watching some “Italian” T.V.
Both of us thinking of poor old mum
Laying in bed gloomy and glum.

‘twas then I looked at me dad
who was feeling all worried and sad
and thought, “what a wonderful old chap”,
smiled and ate every last scrap.

Well! His brain ticked erratic
And he gazed at me most ecstatic.
While I was swatting some pesky flies,
I saw that look, those cheeky eyes.

We’ll I’m off to bed, Said he
and I watched him go, smiling with glee.
Tomorrow we'll have some drop dead cake.
or maybe some fig pasta bake.

Well I couldn't disappoint
nor could I put his nose out of joint.
But as sure as my name is Mandy,
that rum came in very handy.

Review Request (Intensity):
I want the raw truth, feel free to knock me on my back
Review Request (Direction):
What did you think of my title?
How was my language use?
What did you think of the rhythm or pattern or pacing?
How does this theme appeal to you?
How was the beginning/ending of the poem?
Is the internal logic consistent?
Last few words:
Absolutley true! Ha ha ( Chum = dog food ) - neither of us can speak Italian. ( except for the odd word ). But he loves watching it on free view. Ha ha

another funny story and vivid memory. I absolutely like to read more of these.
some lines need a bit smooting but it's a tinything when we talk about such
a well written piece.

Ha ha! Not so much of a vivid memory! Ha ha

I'll be visiting them in two weeks and I know what to expect! On the positive side I have a very good immune system. ( probably due to a good penicillin up take! ) and I'm slowly but surely learning Italian. ha ha

Seriously though! They both have a brilliant sense of homour. Dad is 88 and mum is 85 so I'm very grateful they are still alive. I'll be visiting them around mid November to help them out with some chores.

Great to hear from you. It's manic at my house at the moment. School hols!

Keep safe and thank you for coming by to read and comment! I hope to catch up with you all soon!

People with parents who are creative sometimes inherent the
traits...and with the artistic side comes the erratic sometimes..
I read up that its from the right temporal lobe.. thinking anyway..
Funny some of this poem...Ive been told to keep more of an
eye on things as my mind takes off following a thought or
idea all the time....best before dates..."I just bought that..."
and sharing of rum or tuck a common theme at times..
in the jovial mood!! The other language shows I enjoy too.
and music from french here our second language to others..
my daughter got my artistic flair and the curse of the erratic
mind also...and the "glee" that you describe of your dad..

"Drop dead cake" my favourite line of this jaunty poem..
lately Im on my glum writing
one of my exs loves me but doesnt understand
half of what Im talking about or trying to go on about
and always keeping an eye on things
so I can relate to the Glum statements
but I love humor too!
and this is a great funny write

Thank You Mand!

I'm managing to reply to everyone in dribs and drabs. ( between arrvals and departures of family etc ).

Thank you for your lovely and thought provoking comments. We live on - best before dates - don't know where we'd be without them. Surprisingly we eat quiet expensive food because of it! My dad loves watching free view t.v, He thinks British t.v is not very entertaining - I must admit it is an eye opener seeing other peoples culture and way of life - Italian t.v is very family orientated.

My dad will be happy that you liked the expression "drop dead cake" That's a typical example of his sense of humour! I think you'd get on with him. It was his idea I wrote this poem! He he

Thank you sooo much for coming by to read and comment! I really do appreciate it.

very sharp little man....His loss of his mother late in life
whom he was close too kept him close to his family he
had and held onto.....He had many expressions also
and loved his school days poetry he memorized and
would make up poems during his waits in hunting
when he was still dog punching into his seventies
and an excellent shot providing food for the family
and friends....Many Fridays his italian roadmaster
on the railroad would visit for a drink and tell the
tales of the railroad..My father put in forty one years
with Canadian National Railroad.. Im glad your dad
loves your poetry...my father found me an oddity of
the family but proud of my art and poems also!

Say Hello to You and your Father Mand!

Mr Esker

Your Dad sounds like an amazing character! A real family man - and proud to be so. I bet he had many a story to tell about the Railroad too. I wish I had as good a memory! to be able to memorize poetry is quiet and accomplishment. Perhaps that's where your talent and love for poetry comes from!

Keep safe - lovely to hear from you.

you are so humorous...
how I wish more were born
like you...
I teach my folks humour
they think I have some mental tumor
but what can one do
to tell you,
humour is life
it churns the insides out
and if you could rum
and I run...
humour around the bottle has begun
but then I don't drink rum
your share will be all

give me wine or a soda with whisky
then see
rumor, sorry humour
fountain out from me....
no, no not pee...
can you see
any humour in this poetry
surely...

Well it made me laugh! Ha ha " I teach my folks humour, they think I have some mental tumour" I know the feeling. Ha ha

I like this: " humour is life, it churns the inside out". Profoundly true.

This part cracks me up!

give me wine or a soda with whisky
then see
rumor, sorry humour
fountain out from me....
no, no not pee...
can you see
any humour in this poetry.

Brilliant! You make my day!

Thanks Loved - see you soon.

sparks my mind with a momentary lament... a rumored love story ...between a hubby and wifey ...they tried for years ...but she couldn't conceive ...and said if she couldn't ...at least he could....

times lapsed into poetic history.... she denied him of his desired curry ... yet he savored her from day one ....till she did him abandon ....gave only bed tea and said ....stay away from me ...she couldn't conceive she knew it ....a tumor since birth did she carry ...he was denied the elementary need of a hubby ...she denied it unknowingly

he had cancer later ...he could have lived much longer.....but was denied the last days ....of lovers plays ....till he decayed and died ....slowly passed many a years into oblivion ...we all call time ....

she followed not too soon ....but after another decade or so ....till her rumor turned into a tumor ...and doctors smashed their heads ....why did they not know......

Long time no see I loved your story these are the memories we hoard, I went out to lunch with my dad yesterday he's 84 on Halloween it was my treat and its those days I store away for when I don't have him anymore. As he gets older and older each year I thank god for every minute we have together time is precious isn't it. Sorry for my ramble lol its very late here and I am tired

“The world is full of magic things, patiently waiting for our senses to grow sharper.” — W.B. Yeats

Sooo good to see you. It's fantastic that you went out with your dad! I agree make the most of parents while they are alive. It fills me with dread to think there will come a time when they will just be a memory.

I will be visiting mine in November! When I'm with them it feels as if I've never been away! Weird how life is.

I'm looking forward to visiting you soon.

Keep safe - it really is great to see you. ( thank you for reading and commenting )

It's good that you father is still there to try to poison you lol. But seriously , you should treasure these time before they become but memories. Sounds like he has a good sense of humor which he passed of to his daughter................stan

Indeed he has Stan. He loves playing tricks on people ( especially his family ). Trouble is his eyes give him away!

Nice to hear from you Stan! I hope all is well with you and family.

Looking forward to catching up with everyones work.

who couldn't cook to save his life
nor brew tea to save his wife
he only knew …eat if someone offers …ere you search in your pocket for coffers for someone to care…. he was stinkingly rich …died in abject poverty… no one to incinerate him …he had no money …and someone asked of him …how he was to be cremated… buried or embalmed …
he said anything would do …only if no money was needed too … so he lapsed into eternal slumber …suddenly his heart beats were numbered …as he had no penny … his heart said ‘’why beat for nothing ‘’…and he vanished a multi, multi one …now into historical oblivion …
who was he they ask of me… he was my humorous father ….do you not see …he gave me sense of humour …and knew it will last …and the money he threw at the others …would be spent at last!
I still remember him five decades away
others only did relent….
till their dying days

Thanks Loved! Sounds like you have inherited your fathers sense of humour. Te he

Keep those memories safe.
I lost my Dad in 1963 he was only 66, he fought in the first world war, ran away three times to join his brothers the third time they told him he was in.. He was only 17 then in 1914, but he was the youngest of seven boys and all the others were in..
We lost one Uncle in that war so our family didn't do too bad.
I remember many things about Dad but as yours they are mine lol.
You keep hold of all you can it brings them close, the children tell me about him now and then so things go on but that's another story.
It is coming up to remembrance day, so I will have to look for my poem and piece nearer the time, Take care as you can see by my latest piece I is tired, Yours as always, Ian.T

and start from the bottom

to read some
else we will all will become tumours
instead of humours
hahahaaaaaaaaaaaa

It would be better to let some of the others haul their asses to the undiscovered works as we seem to be doing it too many times, still I* have a sense of humour so may have a go, LOL
You take care young Bard and I bid you a grand goodnight, I shall send energy spheres to you for your tomorrows, they glow and warm you with a beauty that you may weep to see, Yours Ian.T

Hi Ian - I am lucky to have both my parents alive! I'm looking forward to visiting them at the end of this month. It terrifies me to think there will come a time when they are not around. ( assuming I don't pop me clogs first ).

We'll all have to meet up for tea on the other side. He he

Seven brothers in the war! They must have had some incredible stories to tell! I'm glad they all made it through. But I'm so sorry that your uncle died - they were all brave men to put their lives on the line.

Soo nice to see you - take care.
