forks in the road

As I stumble across
the forgotten fork in the road
emotion threatens to overwhelm me.
Five friends long ago
we lost in that collision
my first real taste of things not to be.

And I remember how everyone said
(with after sight’s twenty-twenty vision)
if they’d taken the right instead of the left
just made a different decision
or had perhaps been ten seconds earlier or later
they’d still be alive today....

I think about other crossroads
of choices we make, do and say.
My mind wanders back the various side-tracks
I have wavered along in my life
resolutions reached over the years
as a teenager, a lover, a mother, a wife.
(and how I sometimes wish I’d been wiser
my mistakes have been more than a few)
and how one innocuously simple decision
can change a whole future world view
because dependent on the selection
there are a multitude of possible outcomes.

A documentary I watched
said scientists have been doing their sums
and now it seems it may be so that
the probability is every result exists
in multi-parallel universes.
So say some physicists.

My spirit lightens
my heart catches a breath
as I ponder on this with pure delight.
For if what these scientists say is half true
then somewhere we’ve all got it totally right.

i have now idea how the extra 'few' bit got in there

thanks for the great comment

i would be interested in you physicist's boyfriend's view regarding this theory.

what a boring world that perfect one would be don't you think? nothing to strive for, no incentive to learn....
no misery to feed poetic art....

as i said to shirl - i think that perfect world would probably be pretty boring with no opportunities for learning anything new .....

it is interesting, but maybe sometimes dangerous to our mental well-being - to ponder on how life might've been if.....
i just tell myself that it is all learning and i am my experiences and reactions

As I stumble across, I come across these gems from your hand, Judy. I really appreciate your transparent talent, informative pattern and prolific hands. Learning many things from them. I feel Shirl's alternative will also do.
Overall, a great write, Judy.

As we review past decisions we can only guess at the difference an alternate course would carry us on .Perhaps an alternate decision would have resulted in more wealth but an earlier death. There you go making me think again lmao.......scribbler

infinite universes with infinite outcomes......
and infinite stans and judys

some say our consciousness jumps from one universe to another as we adapt our decisions...
lmao now stan, 'cos now i'm sure i've got your mind ticking full forward
imagine one day jumping to a universe where elvis was still alive?

What was so special about him that we didn't add to him ourselves?
But the parallel universes I haven't read about that sounds truly fascinating judyanne,
I feel as if when I walk outside next I shall be like the surrealist paintings of -was it Chirico? Who did dogs with multiple legs and a nude lady going up stairs also multiple t give the effect of moving, I shall feel I look like them!!!

I like you poem, crossroads in life, and death, its all so unpredictable: "The roots of coincidence" by Arthur Keostler comes to mind, all is beforehand in a pattern governed by time and the coincidences, he says come at the exact completion of the time between those coincidences,. Now he is perhaps out of date as he is long gone, but it was interesting.

"no misery to feed poetic art...." Smile!

"i just tell myself that it is all learning and i am my experiences and reactions" and this I think too, I am ME NOW because of the ups and downs and wouldn't wish to be anything else.

Hope your next cross roads brings you positive joy and an extremely happy life in future years judyanne. Love annanya.
