The Arabian Treasures (2)

ابيات لللإمام علي بن أبي طالب

وَلَدَتكَ اُمُكَ يَابنَ ادمَ باكياً
والناسُ حَولكَ يَضحكونَ سٌروراً
فاحرص على عملٍ تكون اذا بكوا
في يوم موتِكَ ضَاحِكاً مسروراً

My Translation

Verses for: Al-Imam Ali Ben Abi Talib

Oh man! You're screaming when you're given birth

while all the people 'round, were laughing,

then be prepared with deeds, so at the moment of death,

you'd joy in merriment, while all on you crying.

The translation I get from Arabic to English goes like this:-

Have begotten tearful mother, O son of Adam
The people around you laugh pleasure
Make sure to be action if wept
On the day you die laughing, happy

So now to make it run correctly

Oh Adam!
You have become a tearful Mother.
The people around you laugh at your pleasure
Make sure your action doesn't make you cry
As the day you die you will be laughing.

Now that Adam gave birth to Eve he became a mother, probably the tearful, is of the sin that happened to his child Eve.
Strange that there were people around to laughing,
this could have been later as they were sinful.
Now Adam is told that it is not his fault.
Then it is told in the stories that he would die laughing and happy,
as the progress of all things were due to him starting life.

Not sure how it translates otherwise
not my field of learning but I have had a go...

I can imagine how difficult this could be to someone who can't read the Arabic version.

The verses general meaning:
when we are born, as infants comeing out of our mother's womb, we usually scream, while all the people around us are laughing, happy for the birth of that baby. (son of Adam here is only a reference to the human being means.

the rest of the verses is more an invitation for the human being to do as good deeds as he can so that at the day of his death, while all are crying for his death, he would be happy because he did good things all during his life.
Hope this makes any sense to the read?

By the way, I don't trust the on-line translators as they give a misleading literal translation while I alway try to give the essense.

That's better as I had it translated and the mention of Adam I think that the name Adam threw me a bit but it is OK in this old head now,
Thank You, Yours Ian.T
