Gobekli Tepe

Gobekli Tepe

‘Neath layers of barren Turkish soil it rises like a dream
built by folk who had no tools or even pots of clay
older than the Pyramids or Stonehenge, it would seem,
another ancient mystery that challenges today

the purpose of its being built has yet to be foretold
scientists and scholars search their intellects in vain
all they understand is that its architects were bold
and worked with little knowledge of the stature they might gain

nomadic tribesmen congregating in a single place
put aside their differences and changed their way of life
perhaps deciding it was time to leave behind a trace
of all that they had struggled through, the famine and the strife

on megalithic pillars ringed about with other stone
they carved enduring images of beasts and headless things
maybe to remind themselves that they were not alone
or maybe to depict that other beings pulled their strings

some have called this monument a cradle of the gods
others have no thoughts at all, or none they wish to share
eleven thousand years since it was built against all odds
Gobekli Tepe breathes again the sultry Turkish air

How wonderful to see you here and to be writing about Gobekli Tepe.
Wesley asked me about it when I was writing about Cata the Master Mason and his journeys around the world where he taught the ways of building to all he met.
I had to tell him that it was before Cata and was written in in great scrolls in the library of Alexander, where there was a story of Cata's father and how he helped teach the stone masons of then to build Gobekli Tepe.
LOL.
This is another mystery that we have to live with, could be that when Adam and Eve were in the garden of Eden (Iraq of ancient times) that God had to live some place so that he could keep an eye on them..
Loved this write and look forward to many more from your pen,
Yours and thinking of you, Ian.T

This evokes many beautiful memories. Isn't this one of the characteristic of great poetry!!
Though I visited a few places there, I had to google "Gobekli Tepe" and will visit next time.
Thanks for adding to my knowledge.

Told you I'd be back lol. This poem really makes me want to look up more about this place. the discovery must have taken place in last 30 years as I took an architectual history course in 1973 and they never mentioned it. Now on to the poem. The rhythm is pretty much flawless as far as I can tell. So I had to look elsewhere for something to suggest. Dang sure can't offer anything in way of imagery and rhyme or rhyme pattern. AH! HA! I found something to suggest lol. In stanza 4 lines 3 and 4 you repeated "Maybe" near the biginning of each line. Could change one of them to perhaps........Whew! it's a lot easier for you to find stuff in my writing than it is for me to find something to gripe about in yours lol....................stan

a repeat post from Stan, a comment from Ian, and one from Rula, and then an actual comment from Stan, Jesus! I'm so loved it's damned near overwhelming!

Nothing much has changed as you noticed, that nothing changes is no matter though..
You were missed and this commenting lark from our members has been no good for ages.
Even workshops I am not sure what poets are still active now.
During the last few moths we have had quite a few new poets come to the site, but the same old still carries on..
I have an average of two comments on any work I put on Neo at the moment, only when I swear, or do something out of the ordinary is there a better response.
There is one site I post to and they ask for three comments or reviews on poems before they accept a submission.
The workshops here are as good as they were but have tailed off a little, not sure really what is going on.
Don't forget though Lonnie you have been missed, and as I said it is great to have you back writing for us again.
My best thoughts go out to you and yours, you just take care,
Yours Ian.T

My damned magic information box has been acting strangely and Doing thingslike double posting and sticking keys lol. You may have noticed there are some new members and being such they never knew you were gone lol. So don't worry about number of comments, that is a cyclic plague affecting most of us at the moment.............stan
