Shimmer

The ordinariness of the day
contrasted to the
epiphany
that followed...

Another tedious chore
the packet of false
images
stayed on the bathroom
floor

Always led to believe
youth captured
now held ransom
to self- fulfilling prophecy
of age intrigue

The beauty peddlars
stupid suits
but women pardoners too
convinced us
with trickery
that grey hues
were meant only
for the truth meddlars

Ah, the sigh of relief
to not weave the
colour wand
with disingenuous
expectation

I am free!
my hair it tumbles
softly
like silken ropes
shimmering
with steel glints

I've earned my silver
rights
I've broken the hegemony
for my tresses of argentum

Review Request (Intensity):
I want the raw truth, feel free to knock me on my back
Last few words:
I'm embracing my silver foxy side!

good for you!

I , myself enjoyed getting, and looking older....suppose it is a little different for women...but that is the effect of the marketing and advertising game you alluded to... I, and many others, like women that are not afraid of natural, mature features.

nice piece of writing

Al

Appreciate those comments. I've just started this journey. I've not seen my natural hair colour for over 20 years! Excepting those silver glints that come through with relentless regularity. I was inspired by several factors...sick & tired of the expense and mess. The prospect of slowly building health issues using those powerful chemicals on my skin every month. Hitting my 50 birthday! Seeing some very chic and stylish 'Silver-Foxes' walking in town. Watching inspirational ladies documenting their journey into 'natural' on YouTube.

I was left with no more excuses and now i'm feeling brave. At the end of the day, it's just hair and it will grow. However, to a women it encapsulates so much of their perceived femininity that it took a long time to do what really felt natural.

I'm not cutting off my long tresses so I'm having extra chemical intervention to get it back to base and grow out (the irony isn't lost on me)... but within a few months I'll be totally free or the colouring 'serfdom'!

Actually for all the reasons I gave to Al...but I'm really enjoying watching my hair turn white & silver...the silver is so shiny...why didn't I do it sooner? My husband thinks it's hot!

Luv Ells xx
