blind optimism

There’s something to this going blind.
Although one doesn’t see so right
light plays a trick and gives a gift
(presumably to compensate for our poor failing sight)
we discover when we gaze at the heavens
and things which illuminate the night.

Such as eyes of a flying jet plane.
When one is compromised in sight
those lights are amazingly bright
they send out rays like a Christmas star
flying through the heights.

If I stare straight at a twinkling star
its smudge turns into two or three
thousand points of searching pinpricks
beaming down at me.

Venus fairly glows and sparkles
much brighter when I don’t use my specs
and Mars looks like a huge red
five pointed asterisk.
With my glasses on they are just tiny
twinkling gems against the black briny.
When I take them off each presents
a huge beaming radiating disc.

And the moon, well what can I say?
When she’s full especially and I look her way
I see a huge glowing golden ball
(and sometimes there are two of them)
blazing across the Milky Way
which itself blends and fuses painted clusters of jewels
in the act of self-dissemination
forming a kaleidoscope of colourful pools
to wend and arch lazily overhead
from horizon to horizon.

So there’s something to this going blind....

I like the idea, that life becomes more interesting when you have to use your imagination.

Judy,

And to think that you can do all this without psychedelics. My eyes are growing old, too.
Cataracts are creeping up on my eyes, or into them. Some of what you describe in this poem sounds like cataracts. Anyway, I enjoyed the read.

I will be back for more!

Ah ever the poet to find something in this phenomenon,
we are not content with grumbling, we seek compensation
and find we can write about it, paint it in our minds as
something magically interesting, we are the lucky ones,
who can imagine things beyond the factual commonplace
and doing so even take others with us into that realm
of fantasy. You can anyway judyanne.
