Our Lost Generation

their days start with good intent
sparkly with spit to shine
bouncing out, the hours pass away
as does all decorum

blood soaked steps shimmer
whispering meekly, and pleading
to return to the beginning
but this nightmare has no end

our young go out into the world
landing so inebriated and lost
they could be seen as spastic
as another brain cell dies

a family somewhere mourns
devastation ripples our communities
our young continue to die
and some just sit and watch

This write reminds me of all who have died from drug overdoses of pills prescribed from a doctor or pills sold on the streets. I know there are many young who have died recently from this epidemic of oxycontin and its derivatives.

I do not know if I am on the track with this one or not but that is how it read to me.

Sad but true and not just here but everywhere. Addictions and the deaths they cause from overdose. I will say no more.

Mona

I can only echo what has already been said. The loss of life is phenominal and tragic. It feels like the end of the world.

You haven't been *here* so you don't know. In less than two weeks, my grandson's cousin was beaten to death, Barry and I were awakened by gunshots coming from a club less than a block away. The shooter was killed by the police after he shot 3 patrons outside the bar. And our
much loved Spencer, jumped from 20 stories two weeks after moving to Chicago (my grandson drove him) to pursue his law degree. I'm sure drinks and/or drugs was used otherwise the morning would have chosen a better fate.

Perhaps the youth are acting out the feelings of betrayal, an uncertain future and their frustration
with the world as it is. Few have any solid grounding, imo. But then again my generation lost
many due to the war and LSD, overdoses of mixed cocktails and designer drugs.

There is a lot of unabated anger in this world. It's palpable.

I especially liked the last stanza, JC.

The disconnect from nature and the overexposure to extreme violence in the media have led too many young folks to not realize there is a difference between fantasy and reality. So sad..............stan

However, I don't believe that this generation is any different than all others. Indeed, our youth live lives more passive than perhaps any time in history. It does not mean we do not abuse one another. wesley

Actually, counting fingers, as a not so recent graduate, your poem resonated with me. During my university years I saw many friends destroy themselves and their possibilities by climbing into a bottle or smoking their dreams. It was a wake up call when one of my friends died in a DUI last year, and so I decided to try on sobriety. During that 6 month stint I visited a bar with friends, my trusty tonic water by my side, and what I witnessed was horrifying. What I saw could be described as an orgy of inebriated animals engaged in chaotic violence. I was shocked. There was vomit, brawls, crying women, red faced men, broken glass, and the omnipresent smiling bar tender. It was a scene out of some circle from hell. People of my generation I believe are sad, angry, and prefer self-immolation to improvement. Though, for some, like me, all it takes is the collapse of a fellow star, in order to correct one's course. Thank you for sharing your poem.

Very topical, we have just had the riots in London , with kids as young as 7 out on the streets looting and setting fires etc we also have a problem with knife crime and gangs. Although there is much to despair about, it's important to remember that the majority of the youth, are good kids.

I enjoyed the poem great stuff. Welcome back JC

Love Lou

Stand tall, be proud to be who you are, give the world the finger!!!!

drive taxi at night I would see and hear young people saying; " I'm going to get so wasted tonight!" They go out at 10pm. and sometimes I picked them up again at 1-2 am and they were so drunk and trashed that they hardly knew where they were or where they lived. It isn't like when I used to go out. We would go out and have something to eat about 7pm or so, and then spend a pleasant night in each other's company playing pool or darts, talking and just having a good time. I'm not sure what has changed, but I think it is like Stan says; they don't have any real connection with the real world. If only parents would be parents, and not try to be their friends, and put down rules and such, maybe things would be different. We have had a spate of teen deaths from parties thrown for kids by parents for graduating from school or birthday parties. Violence is a big problem here with guns and kids. There have been a number of kids killed recently by just being in the wrong place at the wrong time. You have depicted it perfectly with the lines:

Their days start with good intent
Sparkly with spit to shine
bouncing out, the hours pass away
as does all decorum.

No criticisms here, just praise for your depiction of all it's horror. Love and higgest bugs ~ Gee
