Sunsets

Sunsets
Written by Kelly Ann Wilson

I look for you in sunsets
When the leaves change in the fall
I find you in your daughter
When I need to be strong

I look for you in your old truck
I still pass by around town
I wear your warm plaid jacket in the northern winter
When I walk this country ground

I look for you in music
For a sign in the darkest times
When someone is in need of kindness
In your gifts that became mine

I look for you in that small town
And on those rocky river shores
When they play “The Black Velvet Band” on St. Patrick’s Day
In airplanes and airports

I look for you in your brother
Who looks just like you did
When he wears your old hats and sweaters
I catch a glimpse of you again

I look for you in the children
Who looked up to you like you were 10 feet tall
Now, they are all the ways
The best parts of you live on

I look for them in butterflies
And old men with glasses
And tree-lined driveways
In hockey games and gardens
In superheroes
And homemade buns
You see, I never have forgotten
I remember everyone

I look for you in sunsets
And miss you when the sun goes down
And everywhere that I go
I still see you all around

you make me feel this one keenly. My brother from another mother and friend of fifty years, passed away last year, and I see him in many guises. I see his antiquated Afro-sixties hairstyle, his smooth gait and slender body, the mannerisms of old.
Although I realize almost immediately that it cannot be, my breath catches for a moment, and I see him in the pose of an old memory. Your piece has brought this to mind, and I feel his loss, but I also feel lucky to have known him and shared those times. You brought all that together, with your descriptions of the different scenes. Well done and thank you! ~ Geezer.

you gave me tears and a smile as it reminded me of my late husband and how hard life can sometimes be. Beautifully written and I'm new here so i have no wise words for you. I thought it was wonderful.
