I KNEW THE GUN WAS EMPTY

Inspired by “Seven Spanish Angels” written by Troy Seals and Eddie Setser. One line of the lyric caught my imagination – “She knew the gun was empty” - and I felt compelled to write a poem – or a song. I don’t know which.

I knew the gun was empty; I knew I couldn’t die;
I put the gun unto my head and asked my lover “Why?”

She looked at me with pity, a tear upon her cheek,
It wasn't what I wanted, her sorrow I did not seek.

I pulled upon the trigger, she waited for the blast,
But I knew the gun was empty and my cowardly die was cast.

She saw what I was doing and how it was to be -
A man who couldn’t face the truth or accept reality.

So now it’s really over, this love of ours has died -
As empty as the pistol that foiled my suicide.

She said she must be going, there’s nothing she regrets.
I watched her walk into the night a ghostly silhouette.

I stood there sobbing silently as one with heart bereft.
With tears I called into the dark but saw that she had left.

I shouted “Stay with me, my heart is yours to keep.”
I heard but nought from this young girl so I began to weep.

I pleaded with her one more time, “come back, I’m done with lying,
I need your love, let’s start again, my heart is surely dying.”

She turned and walked my way once more, her face a tearful stain,
And lay before me with that smile I knew she could not feign.

But then the wheel of fortune, like the devil’s own roulette,
Turned once again towards me and placed a winning bet.

The devil knew my cowardly game and snared me in his debt.
My “lucky” number, painted black, had won the fated race.
The prize was 30 silver bullets that betrayed my Janus’ face.

My lying eyes foretold the end of this my deep disgrace.
I took one bullet from the pack and loaded up the gun.
There was no time for sorrow, that’s not the coward’s way.
I spun the barrel one more time…………..

……………and shot her where she lay.

I liked the tongue-in-cheek aspect of this. Many is the time I have felt like knocking someone off but fear of a life in prison deterred me from such a rash and unwise course.

Thanks Lamington.

She wasn't a donkey in the three thirty at Epsom by any chance?

I was very impressed with the smoothness of the rhyming couplets. the thead ran consistent throughout the poem. I was so enthralled with this piece...the ending line hit me like a ton of bricks...my head exploded with unexpected laughter! Excellent!
